I use a REX C100 PID with an SSR to hold my Buffalo at 66C for BIAB mashing - an arduino/Pi would be more sophisticated but you'd probably still need a temperature probe to provide feedback.
You can flick an SSR on and off rapidly, unlike a relay, although they do get hot when switching >2kW so...
Not advice on gas but I use a 40L buffalo for BIAB, have you bypassed the thermal cut out and thermostat so it's always on when plugged in? It should produce a rolling boil with no issues then. I also use an outboard temperature controller to hold it at 66C for mashing, and plug it straight into...
I use it in a PA/IPA with Simcoe and Mosaic, recipe was originally Cascade but works with MB and Huell Melon as they're similar
19L batch:
3.5kg pale Maris Otter or similar
250g light crystal
150g torrified wheat
90 BIAB mash@66C
60min minimum boil
25g MB, 25 Simcoe @30min
10g MB, 10g Simcoe...
From reading the manual it sounds like they're calibrated to an absolute weight so worst case I'll be subtracting the weight of the empty keg. The Tare function might do that for me if it remembers that weight or it may be possible to calibrate the scales to think an empty keg is 0kg.
Whilst I usually have a second keg ready to switch over to, I think it would be useful to know when I'm about to empty one so I can get another brew going to fill the void and maximise conditioning time.
To this end I've been thinking about getting some postal scales to put in the kegerator...
Not an advert but bought everything bar the gas cylinder from BrewKegTap. Took the guesswork out of it and seemed reasonably priced.
Can't wait to get some beer in it, especially with this warm spell we're having...
For the benefit of others, I picked up an Indesit DLAA-50 under-counter fridge on freecycle https://www.indesit.co.uk/i/cooling/fridges/indesit-dlaa-50-fridge-in-white/f083971
It fits two new style (tall thin: 629 x 213mm) cornies (I got the KegLand ones) perfectly after the shelves are...
I did this (all from Screwfix)
10m of 10mm copper pipe, wind carefully around a large paint tin or similar cylinder being careful not to kink.
Some Fitt Heavy Braided NTS Wintech Hose as it's temperature rated to 60C which is better than most hose pipes
Jubilee clips and PTFE tape to connect the...
They were about 4 months old but kept in the freezer. I wouldn’t say it was jock strap like, more earthy/smokey but I will look at sanitisation.
It’s drinkable as the flavour element is not overwhelming but if dryhopping will mask it I figure it’s worh a go, no?
I’ve got a barrel of ready to drink pale ale (all grain) but there’s a nasty stale/smokey/old socks element to the flavour even though it’s fully conditioned and clear. I’ve attributed this to older Styrian Goldings hops I added towards the end of the boil, based on what I’ve read, the question...
These are what I have and on re-reading the listing they are indeed stainless steel
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/New-AC-220V-1500W-Heating-Element-Heater-Heating-Tube-for-Electric-Kettle-/262595307357
I do have some discolouring (looks a bit like rust) on one of the elements, is that just...
Having done 4 successful BIAB brews with a modified Youngs fermenting bucket, 2 x 1.5kw chinese kettle elements and a tap I'm thinking I'd like to upgrade and get a larger volume vessel to give me 23l in the fermenter - currently I risk boiling over if I start the boil at 27l which is roughly...
If you want to test the theory first, you can convert a Youngs fermentation bucket to a boiler with the addition of a couple of these https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/New-AC-220V-1500W-Heating-Element-Heater-Heating-Tube-for-Electric-Kettle-/262595307357 and a bag to put your grain/hops...
I'm planning to transition from kits to extract and then BIAB this year so last weekend made a DIY boiler with a couple of 1.5kw elements, a burco boiler tap and a Youngs Fermenting bucket. Holes cut with a stanley knife. I boiled up 15 litres as a test run and let it simmer/boil for 45 mins and...
