    Old beer

Never tried it, but they still sell that 8.6 in my neck of the woods - (https://www.anbl.com/bavaria-8-6-500ml-15624)

Ants all over my hop plant

What Clint said. Ants will bring aphids onto plants and farm them; they take honeydew from the feeding aphids and sometimes they eat the rebels that don't behave. In general ants are not doing your vines any good. ...retired bug guy.

Squirrels keep eating my hop plants, will the lower shoots still produce hops if the plants cant reach its full height

Are you certain it is squirrels doing the damage? I've grown hops for over 30 years and never had one attack a vine. I have more squirrels in my yard than you can shake a stick at, and they damage every damn veggie or flower they see; but never a hop plant. At the moment, I see two families...

    Ken Shales recipe please

I have a 1983 reprint of the 1967 copy. It has Yuletide and Yuletide Mark II recipes in it. If you'd like I can scan and post them?

Putting sparkle into wine without secondary fermentation

Are Sparkletops the same as Beerbrite Caps ? I still have these I bought in the mid 1980s; were a pain to use though, for a clear beer.

    Refractometer

Murphy's Law states if you buy one hydrometer it will surely roll off the bench onto the floor at it's first outing, but if you buy two, they will live happily together for many years to come. In the mid-1980s I was told to buy that second hydrometer, because of the certainty of the impending...

    R.I.P Thread.

Prowse was one of the admen/exercise models for the Bullworker in the late 1960s-early 70s. I kept mine for many years; never actually used it much; and it shows!

Pressure Barrels - More than you wanted to know!

A very well written and informative essay on these kegs. I had 5 plastic barrels in the 1990s, eventually switching to corny kegs, and I still bottle some. I eventually tossed the plastic barrels because I thought that over time they may have become brittle or otherwise untrustworthy. Do you...

Durden Park - Old British Beers

Well I fired off an enquiry to Durden Park and they were kind enough to check their archives and come back to me within the hour. The upshot is that, although the quality of the hops of the day was unknown, the alpha acid content was probably somewhere around 5%, and that the recipe fits in with...

    how to calculate ABV

Since the 1980s I've been using Dave Lines's OG - FG / 7.46 for ABV. Is this not used or just plain wrong ?

    Whitbread's London Porter (Durden Park)

I've made the Simonds bitter (#7) several times, and like it. I also made Mild Beer 1836 (#6) Rigden, Faversham and a High Gravity mild 1844,(#29) Tamar. These two were just OK. I have several others page marked but haven't gotten around to actually making them. There are quite a few recipes...

    Whitbread's London Porter (Durden Park)

"This beer is one that is listed on the DP website," I've brewed this DP porter several times and it's a favourite of mine; actually just brewed a 3 gal. batch today. It does well after some aging, (I kept a few bottles for up to 2 years) but is quite nice when it is still young.

    so who gets gout..

I suffered from gout for many years, but would never have chalked it up to over consumption of beer. I actually got my first bout on the job, working outdoors (forestry sector) during summer, not enough hydration. The books say it can last 7 days or so; yet I and a co-worker routinely were...

How do you de-ice your car windows.

But if you can't see to drive, how could a car thief? ;) Haven't bothered to myself, but here in Canada some people mix alcohol and water in a mister bottle to spray on the windshield. Supposed to work like a charm. To prevent frosting up of the inside of the windows, allow the inside of the...
