    Live on a canal boat...

You don't need to have the engine in gear to check it's working as expected. And you can fairly easily see if the prop is good and the prop shaft is turning and free. I wouldn't worry too much about that.

    What did you brew today?

Brewday at Kirkstall Brewery in Leeds. We made a smoked porter. Looking forward to seeing how it turns out!

Motorcyclist fined after fireball Cambridge car crash

Exactly this. If the driver couldn't see up the road then he shouldn't have made the turn. It doesn't look like the driver hesitated and just made the turn regardless. Biker was obviously motoring somewhat but I don't believe for a second if they'd actually looked properly then this could have...

    Boiler recommendations please

Then that'll probably be all you need. 35L capacity gives you a bit of space/headroom so you're not limited in your boil.

    BrewCon 2023 Comp

Went last year and had a thoroughly good time. The talks were very good. Malt Miller had a stall with lots of shiny equipment although not sure if they're going to be there this year - I got the impression from speaking to Rob at MM that they wouldn't be, which is a shame because along with the...

    Boiler recommendations please

Digiboil 35 is cheap and cheerful. But it is just that, a boiler. I think there are some upgrades to make it do a bit more than that but if you're just after a basic boiler, then you can't go wrong with it.

    Live on a canal boat...

No, the licence fee goes entirely to the canal and river trust who use it for maintaining and supporting the canal network. Sure, policing and social services are everyone's responsibility and I guess my (when I was a full time live-aboard boater) contribution came from the income tax I paid...

    Live on a canal boat...

That and we pay a licence fee which covers things like water and waste/rubbish removal and sewerage. Boaters have far less of an impact on local services than those living in a house. But worth pointing out that those who live on a residential mooring do pay council tax.

    Live on a canal boat...

I did this very thing about 7 years ago. I still have my narrowboat but to cut a long story short, my on board life came to a stop when work that was being done on my boat too far, far longer than it should have done so ended up having to move back to dry land. But still have the boat and got...

    Source/supplier of glycol?

Hey all, Looking for a new glycol supplier for my chiller. Wondered if anyone can recommend anywhere? I had bought some of Amazon about a year ago and it needs replacing (after a fierce fermentation, some of the foam/beer got into the glycol tank of the chiller). The cost on Amazon seems to...

PM calls for bully XL ban as man killed in dog attack

The PM has ordered urgent work to ban American bully XL dogs in light of the recent spate of attacks, including a fatal attack on Thursday. A man was left in a critical condition after being attacked by two dogs in Stonnall, near Walsall. He was taken to Birmingham's Queen Elizabeth Hospital but...

    Hi everyone

Not a terrible idea. Good fermentation conditions is the difference between beer you'll want to drink and beer you'll want to pour down the drain. No point in spending 20-25 quid on ingredients only to fall at the last hurdle on fermentation. Buckets with a heat belt is fine but get yourself a...

Ulez expanded to include whole of outer London

I find rail services just a step above adequate, on a good day.

More money into the city's coffers? Why is that a bad thing?

Slug & Lettuce and Yates's owner to charge more at peak hours

Steer well clear of Yates's and the Slug and Lettuce, then! Their beers are ****!
