My son thinks I'm at the forefront of the grammar Gestapo, though I am all too fond of my ... ellipsis. He does accuse me of having infected him with the verbal tick of muttering 'fewer' under his breath while listening to other people use 'less' incorrectly. My personal bugbear though is 'advise' and 'advice' which I see from colleagues written incorrectly which takes me from calm to wound up in a fraction of a second. I do have to admit to struggling with spelling as a child, and even now will have to check words ending -ant and -ent for spelling, such as adament/adamant, so I do have a lot of sympathy for those who need to check such things rather than understand them inherently. Now, if you really wish to wind me up then use American spellings such as color, sulfur and hemoglobin ... but to really really have Anna wide-eyed and gritting her teeth ... refer to studying Math at school 😡

Noah Webster has an awful lot to apologise for. The only salve being that not all his amended spellings were accepted : 26 of Noah Webster’s Spelling Changes That Didn’t Catch On

When I worked in day time general practice, my staff were very happy when we moved to computerised notes and they no longer had to decipher my handwriting, so yes that's a very fair point 🙈 .

I should have know this thread would be triggering for me 😂 . I've already had to accept significant changes to the names of medications to the 'International' (read that as American) spellings in 2004 https://www.sehd.scot.nhs.uk/cmo/CMO(2004)03.pdf which was quite a period of adjustment but I'm ok with these now, though still find the ph to f change in cephalexin annoying. Similarly, I coped with the loss of the umlaut from oöcyte and just about coped with the loss of the o from fetus... only because the o was a Victorian addition to the latin root.

Ok I'm going to go back in to hiding rather than providing more ammunition for 'how to wind Anna up' 😄

Agreed, like this simple guide - by taking away the 'you' :

If you could say 'We' then it's (you and) I.
If you could say 'Us' then it's (you and) ME.
For example:

I (we - you and I) gave Dave a present.
Dave gave me (us - you and me) a present.

I mean you wouldn't say,
"Us gave Dave a present" ,
Nor,
"Dave gave we a present" ,
Would you?
That's the closest to making sense I can describe it.

When I was doing my accountancy training, I was sent on an audit to a distillery with our Australian secondee.

I thought the distillery’s Finance Director was going to punch him in the face, he wrote “whiskey” so many times on his Matters Arising document!
 
Interesting thread. Not sure why different spellings "wind people up." Yeah, I know about placement with quotation marks. I only get angry when someone corrects another, especially one who's clearly not capable of more.

I've not seen someone replace "lager" with "larger" until now. On the sister-site, I've seen someone get out of sorts over "Belgian" and "Belgium."

On both sites, I just correct all the posts I read in my head just enough to understand them. It's automatic and I wouldn't normally give it a second thought except for this thread bringing it to my attention.
