I’ve had enough of work today and I’m having an early beer, as about to start prepping tea for tonight.

This is my first full half of my Kolsch that unfortunately got to 1.000 FG, so ended up at 6% rather than 4.7% as intended. Doesn't taste that dry though.

It is 5 weeks and 3 days old today, but as you can see it is still extremely cloudy and I don’t think it’s going to get much clearer. The sulphur is on it’s way out though and it’s nice and fruity, plus the carbonation is spot on. There aren’t any major off-flavours in this one that I can detect, as opposed to my last one that tasted like over-boiled carrots 😂🙈

It’s a little more bitter than what I would have liked, due to the very low gravity throwing off the balance. Becoming drinkable though and the lager hating husband is a fan of it (I realise it’s a half-breed lol). Anyway that’s enough rambling from me, I better get on with some stuff! Bottoms up friends!

Carrots ? Spuds ? All you need now is a meaty ipa and you could drink a Sunday roast 😜

I thought it would be fun to try this kinda blind, without looking up the recipe or the descriptor for Ernest hops until nearer the end.

It looks pretty good - little bit of (hop?) haze but clear enough to see the steady stream of bubbles that kept the head going, and good lacing on the glass.

I generally struggle with aroma but I definitely got something fruity. On tasting I thought maybe mango and maybe just a little bit of pineapple. Looking at the hop descriptor after about ⅔ pint it said apricot and nectarine so yeah, something like that.

I thought there was a really nice balance between the hop flavour and bitterness and the malt flavour. I also thought the mouthfeel was pretty substantial for 4.7%.

Overall I really liked this - my only doubt is whether the tropical/stone fruit flavours from the hops are a bit out of keeping with the style, though I did get used to them. For sure the base beer would work really well with more traditional English or American hops, the Ernest hops might be a bit more divisive.

But would I have another pint of this? Absolutely 👍🍻
