which Hop comdo would you go for?

I am a total extract kit homebrewer which I make no apology for as I am more than happy with the results I get.
I am now starting to experiment with dry hops and so far am also happy with the ones I've made.
I have just bottled an ale dry hopped with 40gCitra & 40g Simcoe.
I have another ale ready to dry hop and I would like to know your feelings as to what I might do.
I am not trying to have a big massive hop bomb of a beer but I certainly want to know that there are hops in it.
Obviously cost comes into it as no point in spending more for hops than my kits.
Therefore I was thinking around 80g to 100g of hops per 40 pint batch.
I currently have 60g Citra...60g Simcoe...& 100g Summit.
I dont know if one goes better or worse with the other or indeed if they dont mix well. you also may recommend using less of one if its more overpowering.

I would say Simcoe and Summit are somewhat similar (at least to my palate) as compared to Citra. They are all nice though and you can't go wrong mixing and matching those three. I like Citra as a standalone (SMASH) hop. I use Simcoe in my imperial IPA. I think it's one of those things where you will just need to experiment and see what you like best.
 
One of my fav combination of hops, citra, simcoe, mosaic they seem to really work well in pale ales.
For a single hop, talus for a huge pink grapefruit hit.
 
I'd be interested to hear from any IPA / Pale ale brewers what their favourite hop combos are

Which do you use for bittering?

What % proportions do you use & when?

And most importantly, how would you describe their unique blend of flavours?


I'm looking forwards to trying my own recipe: using citra & centennial for bittering, then using equal amounts of both & mosaic towards end of boil, whirlpool & dry hop
 
I use Summit a lot in a nice summer style Pale Ale.
I would think that Simcoe and Summit would marry together quite well as they are a similar style of hop that is not too overpowering so either or both with some punch you in the face Citra sounds good just do not over hop if you are wanting a Pale Ale style rather than a IPA hop bomb
 
For my IPA’s, I always use magnum as a bittering hop and then the holy trinity of Chinook, Citrus and Columbus. But I’ve been known to sneak Summit into the mix as well!

its funny you say that, as all I get is coconut oil from my Single hop talus pale ale. Was at the Belfast brew club yesterday and as well as mine another brewer had a talus IPAand everyone was getting coconut oil from both. Both got our hops from geterbrewed and we were speculating they may have mixed them up with sabro maybe? no tropical flavours at all.

I do quite like a bit of punch to my brew (about the same level you'd find in Gamma Ray, Punk, Lagunitas). Taste, but without torturing my tonsils! 😉

Sounds like if I want to use citra then I'd probably make it around 25%, so as to let the other 2 not be overwhelmed

I'm quite keen on mild citrus and piney types - maybe I should swap to using Chinhook instead of either Mosaic or Centennial 🤔
