Pretty new to homebrew I am on my third kit. Wherry, Admiral and Nelson's currently fermenting. As they were Munton's kits I thought that next I would try their Connoisseurs Range IPA Bitter. On reading the instructions it suggests replacing the supplied yeast with Munton's Premium Gold Yeast. My question is why not do it in the kit in the first place? The additional cost to Munton's would be minimal and if this is what's recommended why supply an inferior yeast in the kit?

The old motto “Look after the pennies and the pounds will look after themselves.” applies.

If only 1 out of 10 buy the alternative yeast then “great” thinks Munton who have now captured another Premium Gold Yeast user.

If the remaining 9 out of 10 use the original yeast then:
  • If it tastes okay then you can buy the Premium Gold on the next one.
  • If it tastes terrible then it was obviously your fault for not buying the Premium Gold.
Unfortunately, Muntons isn’t a charity but it has a canny advertising department.
:hat:

There is also a saying "false economy" you may lose customers of what is called "Connoisseurs" Range by admitting in the instructions that it is only at its best by substituting one of the key ingredients for the sake of a few "pennies". In business it is harder and more expensive to gain new customers rather than retaining existing ones.

I think that's pretty poor from Muntons. I've been involved in marketing for many years and I would illustrate this as an example of how not to do it. If people are paying out for a product, they expect it to be the best it can be. In this case, it clearly isn't.

I've always wondered why Muntons do this. Even on their premium Hand Crafted kits you get a 7g sachet of non-descript yeast. Surely they want their products to brewed to the best they can be without the need for the upsell? And lets face it if you are forced to upgrade the yeast, it's unlikely to be to Muntons Gold. Seems they have may started to listen to feedback though as they Flagship range now has Fermentis yeast included.

It just seems strange that you put out a product which effectively says don't use the ingredient we supplied but use a better one which we recommend (and can supply).
Out of interest what yeast would people replace the supplied one with?

Baffles me too. I normally use Crossmyloof for my yeast, so would be inclined to use their "Midland", or "Four" for this, but something like S04 from Fermentis would be my choice other wise.
