Not sure if anyone else might be interested in this but Attic Brewing Co have partnered with Charles Faram to run a competition using a new hop, Opus, which will be supplied free of charge. The competition is also free to enter. Beers to be submitted 23 September for judging on October 7.

If you want to take part sign up and they will send you some hops later this month. These new hops must constitute at least 50% of the hops in your beer.

Rather rules out a good lager... but the hop doesn't marry with that either, might be fun to try. Hmm, will be fun though. It doesn't say how much of the hop you'd receive which makes putting together a recipe a bit tight, it would also be worth smelling before trying to devise a recipe. I'm going to have a go, thanks for the heads up. 😀

They're no longer accepting entries by the look of it :(.

A kveik might work, but I think they mean registration is open until 24th Aug and beers need to be in 23rd September. They probably limited the spaces as well, hence not accepting more entries.

They only send the hops out on the 26th

Everyone will have the same constraints which should level the field at least. Mind you, you could always brew a beer and do a late dry hop with these hops - you’d be a week to two weeks ahead of the game 😉
This is exactly what I thought about doing and then realised I couldn't really fit another brew in with a holiday coming up anyway.

They're not a new hop, they're the old CF182 available from Malt Miller. CML also have them. I've had some knocking around in the hop fridge for a couple of years now. About time I dusted them down and gave them a whirl.

Not a new hop?! Now I just feel dirty and used! 😜
Well it's only 3 years old as an early commercial crop so it's still pretty new, and based on the variation in AA 2019 to 2021, was still very much settling down during this time. There's also no published analysis of cohumulone or other content, so this does appear to be very early days for it. I did sign up as well, and am going to stick to UK hops (well other than a wee bit of magnum) if I receive any of the hops. Bit of fun anyway 😀.

Hops received already - woo hoo! 🥳

The bitter was mine. Top prizes too, for third place I get 12 (50g) packs of hops, a Charles Faram backpack, glass, mug and travel cup, Attic pint and 2/3 pint glasses, and a 12 pack of Attic beers. Not bad eh?!
Which one did you brew for this one the best bitter or the award winning strong bitter?
