Everyone uses it for making wine so I was wondering could you boil up a couple of bottles and add it to a beer kit? Or maybe you'd just be as well buying one of the commercially available fruit beer kits.....

seems an obvious one to try but I can't find any discussion on it on here - Let's wait and hear what the experts say - Not sure if I want to sacrifice 20 litres of beer + ribena!

Keep it to yourself and don't tell anyone else but one of my beer's for the spring thing has been primed using the Eastern European Towicz Cherry Syrup ;) . It has given a very subtle aroma and hint of Cherry in the beer. I see no reason why you could not do the same and prime your beer with Ribena

That's interesting because I did also wonder about just using it for priming, them I thought why not just chuck a bottle in the primary - or maybe even what about a bottle in the primary and some for priming. mmmmm i might just have to try this.

ANOTHER THING - someone verify my maths here - On the label it says that there's 10.9g of sugar in 100ml of this ribena and that's AFTER it has been diluted to a 1:4 ratio (and that would mean 20ml ribena and 80ml water).
So am I right in saying there would be a massive 545g of sugar in a 1L bottle of undiluted ribena?

So I'm thinking 1 can Canadian Blonde, 1 Bottle Strawberry Ribena, 500g Brewing sugar.

Any Thoughts?

Well she's on anyway , if I succeed in making in something that doesn't taste like pish i'll let you know exactly what I did ......

I like it,

And that's what all this about isn't it? Experimenting and seeing whhat the outcomes are. Could be a winner!

I definitely found there was a big temptation to go a bit crazy when I started brewing, adding fruit/spices etc - the inevtiable results were less than impressive
It didn't take long for me to realise it was more sensible to get some experience brewing "proper" beers before experimenting...To make a good recipe you're probably looking at brewing and tweaking a good few batches, so the chances of chucking a bottle of ribena into a beer kit and hitting the jackpot are probably quite slim!
There are certainly some tasty brews (to my taste) which are pretty experimental these days but I can't help feeling there needs to be a good understanding of the rules before trying to break them :thumb: And I've got a good way to go yet!

All that said, yes the chance to experiment is definitely a benefit of brewing yourself.

Would the bottles of essence that my local HBS sell do the trice without the need for boiling? They sell about 100 different essences that are used with the alcotech kits - I am thinking a couple of banana or strawberry essences added to 2nd fermentation would impart a "hint" of flavour

might be worth a try - only one way to find out!
but yeah they probably won't need boiled

Sorry, only just spotted that. It also says 27.3g per diluted serving, a serving being 50ml + 200ml water, so 20 servings per litre bottle, so your maths is correct :thumb:

Are these essences not just for spirits ? :wha:

I looked at them but was told no avoid as they were not meant for beer.
Beer flavouring would probably have been one of the last things their manufacturer might have considered, but I fail to see any reason why you shouldn't try it. Test a few drops in a pint first though, I would imagine a little will go a long way.

I knew I'd need that A level at some point :)

So I guess I should have taken a picture of the final product however the batch has all been guzzled.
Turned out better than I expected. Initially I thought it wasn't sweet enough for a fruit beer and could really have done with some artificial sweetener at the end HOWEVER, left a little longer in the bottle and everything settled down nicely. Wife particularly liked it.

So here's what I put in (and I will state now the quantities were purely derived from what I had lying about, no science involved whatsoever!):

1 x Coopers Canadian Blonde
1.5L Ribena (boiled for about 20 mins)
400g Dextrose
300g Maltodextrin
safale S-04

topped up to 20Litre total

OG 1042

I also used Ribena (boiled) to prime (there's 545g sugar in a 1 litre bottle so you can work out how much you want to use)
