I am just about to start my first WOW following Moley's excellent step by step guide, only to discover that to my horror I have bought orange juice with "bits", (should've put my glasses on when I bought it  !). My question is, can I just strain the bits out, or should I buy another juice without bits in?

No idea, I think I would be inclined to start it off in a bucket and strain to a DJ after a few days.

I have done that and they have all settled out in the DJ. I thought it made the lava lamp stage even more exciting

gsidford, did you follow the same instructions as per the one without bits, or did you start it off in a bucket as Moley suggested?

I am going to make two at the same time, one red, one white and only have one bucket, so would prefer to do it all in the DJ.

Do you need to leave extra head space in the DJ, or will just below the shoulder still be ok? don't want it errupting all over the place! :D

I just used it in the DJ same as the instructions. I have had WOW escape through the airlock, but cannot remember whether it was the one with the bits or not.

Thank you for your prompt replies, I will make them with the bits then, as the sugar syrup and tea are cooled and ready to go in.

Watch this space......... :D

HELP DISASTER  I have just put all the ingredients into the DJ and topped up with water to below the shoulder, then discovered that I have MISSED OUT the sugar syrup, what an idiot    .
What do I do now?, if I add the sugar syrup to the mix, there will be no space in the DJ for fermetation, but it I take some of the juice/water out the ratios won't be right.
Should I just go and buy some more juice and start again and make my husband drink the mix as it was he who broke my concentration by interrupting me!

Please help this poor newbie idiot, thank you,

don't panic! pas de problem!

just make sugar syrup with a very small amount of water, you don't really need all the sugar to disolve in the water before adding, just as long as some of it has, and you get all the sugar into the DJ - you don't even really need it as liquid anyway, but the yeast gets to work quicker on liquid sugar than solid (which will disolve within a few hours as it is)

not to worry, not a mistake as such, just a different way of doing the same thing.

thanks Crastney, but I already had the sugar syrup made up and it comes to about 900ml, far too much to put in DJ.
Do you think I could just mix it all in then divide the mix between two DJs one a 1 gal and the other a 1/2 gal, that way there should be enough head space in them both.

Have decided to make double the quantity in a bucket, but this time with sugar syrup  , then divide this between the DJs then top up to required level.
Now off on a trip to Aldi's to buy some more grape juice and hopefully carry on without any more hiccups!

Thank you all for your help, but you may not have heard the last of me yet!!

i personally would of poured away some of the solution. or re-done the sugar syrup. either way it would still taste the same(ish) :P

Good luck anyways and welcome to the forum!
