Like the title says what do you love about homebrewing APART FROM THE END PRODUCT. Do you like the prep that goes in to brewing or the science of it etc :thumb:

I enjoy a stressful day, hoping I don't get a stuck sparge, that an element doesn't blow oh and the fact that this might be the day that my plastic boiler breaches and I may spend the next six weeks having skin grafted from my back and ar*e to my meat and two veg.

Apart from that I enjoy drinking it

Making the gear has been the best bit so far. Love making new hop strainers, tweaking bits etc. And telling people that that lovely smell is 80 pints of fab beer brewing :)

We love the prep associated with brewing. Getting all the stuff ready the day before . Weighing grain and hops etc. Then the smell of the mash like ovaltine and maltesers mixed. Watching the yeast working and of course the end result :thumb:

What I don't love is going out to the garage, spending time ensuring the next 2 required cornies are clean and sanitised and ready to be filled then discovering that one of the 2 fermenters contains vinegar.

Oh well, I got one corny full from the uninfected fermenter, and a large batch of vinegar to clean the drains out.

Fermenters are now having a long soak with bleach.

Anyone know if it's safe to leave a corny with remnants of Starsan in it from sanitising it, or should I rinse it all out and re sanitise next time.

What I really love is the fact I am actually producing something end to end, in my work I never really produce anything, and usually am never around to see the end result complete as I have usually moved onto another project before the biuild is complete. So I don't get a huge amount of satisfaction from seeing something complete, I do with my beer though, and I get to drink it.

Sorry to hear about the infected ale Steve it happened to us and was an acetobacter infection. Maybe your better getting a new fv as ther is a risk of it happening in the same fv again.

I love coming up with a beer design over the week and putting it into action at the weekend, ordering ingredients on the thursday when formula is decided on, they arrive the next morning (from The Homebrew Company (Irish Version)), building up a yeast starter and then friday evening clean down brewery and fill to volumes required, all heated for sat morn 7am, brewday begins. It keeps me entertained all week.
What I love more is the longer you are at this brewing malarky, the closer you end up to what you had in your head at the start of the week. At the begining it was a case of a lot of guess work.
I LOVE MAKING BEER

I thoroughly enjoyed the challenge of building my brewing kit :drink:

Having done all that, while I do enjoy a brew day, the opportunity to do that without the Mrs and the kids moaning about the smell (OK, it's not to everyone's taste, but I love it!) is few and far between

Once the brewing is done, it's the bubbling of the fermenter that I just love to hear, and the smell of the fermenting beer is a total joy

ref infection , when are you guys going to realize the best NATURAL DISINFECTANT is bicarbonate of soda . WAKE UP SMELL THE COFFEE

I mostly make wine with demijohns and just love watching the yeast work.

weighing out the grains, having a bit of a nibble on them to get a taste for the different grains. That amazing smell that comes up from the mash tun as you are doughing in.
The satisfying feeling & sound you get when you cut open vacuum packed hops and the air rushes into the packed & it slowly expands.
The smell of the hops as you are weighing them out.

I dont like all the cleaning and sanitising. Or the downer when you realise the latest brew is a bit ****... :?

Being able to nurse my baby Wine or cider when i come home from a night of work. getting home at 4am and realising how amazin its gonna taste at the end :D

Good point! I'm on here a fair bit these days

The price, I am a tight git and would have never drunk wine until I had got a job but making it enables me to make it on the cheap and makes a lovely change from beer. Wow goes down a great with female students as well as I have recently found out

I like the chance to experiment and the appreciation I see in friends and family when drinking my beer. On brew day, my absolute favourite moment is when the hops go into the boil. If i'm not already drinking a beer, that always sends me to the kegerator, without fail.
