Howdy all,

So I'm thinking I'd like a change from the usual C**ling, B*****er and F**ters (Some take offence to these seemingly inferior beverages :P) as I have a little overtime pay heading my way soon.

Fancy helping me make a little shopping list?

I'm not looking to spend a lot, under twenty preferably, but I'd like opinions on the best bottled brews you can buy in say Tesco or Bargain Booze.

Apologies if this is the wrong place for such a thread, or if it even seems a bit selfish. I hoped people would jump at the chance to help a budding brewer stray away a little from the mass produced 'pap'

Any ideas? I might go this weekend coming if I get a small list going. Adding my own review of them of course

I take it you mean home brew beer ?

They say home brewing is cheap.... Well yes and no. It certainly works out cheaper per cost of each pint produced but I'm afraid for £20 you ain't going to get more than ONE GOOD kit. But hey ho that can mean 40 pints......
Which ever brew you go for and there are many good kits on offer I would suggest you go for a 2 can beer kit of your choice. This will cost you in the region of your £20, but the resulting beer will be far superior to any one can kit costing £10-£12.
Search through the forum in the kit reviews and see what others think of specific kits and then make your choice, either a mild ale an IPA or a stout. I would suggest you don't choose a lager for your first few brews, they are not that easy to make a good one, until you have had a little experience.
Of course that is only my opinion.
St.Peters Red Ruby Ale, Better Brew India Pale Ale, the list is nearly endless. Better to spend that little more and get good quality beer for your enjoyment.
Enjoy your brewing

If you are referring to shop bought ales the list is even longer to choose from. Take your £20 and go stand in the beer aisle at Morrisons, they have a great selection of " proper beers "

I am and I have, spoilt for choice really. Seek almighty guidance :)

Silly me.....

I've recently had a Thwaites " Old Dan " and was really impressed with it... Full of flavours and tastes like a rich fruit cake... and at 7.4% it makes your nose tickle only found it in 330 ml bottles tho.

Fullers 1845 6.3% further in your brewing you can harvest the yeast from this beer!

Fullers London pride.

Marston pedigree.

Now if you have a waitrose :

Thornbridge Jaipur. £2.40 but worth the experience !

st Austell Tribute.

Timothy Taylor Landlord.

Citra.

Lots of hop variations for you to savor rather than glug ;)

Enjoy your testing! :drink:

I feel that's what I do now, glug for the fuzzy feeling rather than taste. But yes good suggestions peeps :)

dunno if its in Tesco or Bargain Booze but I'd second the Thornbridge Jaipur IPA-stunning beer, my favourite at the moment, had 6 bottles on saturday night!

others to look out for in Tesco
Fraoch Heather Ale - Williams Brothers
7 Giraffes - Williams Bros

Bitter and Twisted and Schiehallion - both by Harviestoun brewery.

you cant beat a bit of Sierra Nevada Pale Ale

anything by Fyne Ales (dunno if they are in the shops though)

Do they still sell this.

only kidding :D

Two buys from Tesco's recently which I rather liked were Sierra Nevada Torpedo and Goose Island IPA

My local Tesco had Oakham JHB last time I went.

Fuller's ESB is probably my fav supermarket beer though.

two crackers from tesco are Blue Moon Wheat Beer which tastes like a god damned orange;

and Sierra Nevada Torpedo (Tesco's Double IPA's slightly less offensive and somewhat more palatable brother.) Loads of cascade hops :thumb:

Always on my buy list.

Four bottles for £5 at my local store. Now that's cheap for such a strong beer.

Blue Moon

Had this on tap in Camden beginning of the year.

Did not approve

Even swapped it with a mate for his [censored mass produced lager]

Some nice suggestions coming tho :D

Some people have a six pack, however I have a party seven :D

I once opened one on a night train from London after a hot day and after dropping it a couple of times. It was in the days of the separate compartments. Went off like a bomb and those little sliding windows wouldn't open up enough to get rid of it. We had to evacuate, came back in 10 mins and there was a blanket of foam eveywhere. I bet the cleaners were a tad upset
