Well, today was the day to try out my new boiler and perform a SDM boil brew.
Boiler.JPG

Nice shiny new boiler ready for action.
I decided to try and create the Summer Lightning brew detailed on page 164 of Graham Wheeler's book.
I used :-
SDM.JPG

3kG Extra Light spray dried malt extract
220gms of Pale SDM as the shop only had 3 bags of Light in stock.

46gm Challenger 7.12% added on the boil.

as you can see, the Cygnet kept a lovely boil running.
After my tea :D (70 minutes ish) I added 15gm of Goldings 5.3% and 3gms of re-hydrated Irish Moss and left it boiling for a further 10 minutes.
I then switched it off and allowed it to cool to 80 degrees before dry hopping with another 9gms of Goldings.

I then ran it off into the FV and am typing this up whilst I wait for the temperature to drop to about 25 degrees to do an SG check and introduce the yeast starter created from some Whitbread strain B yeast obtained from Vale brewery.
The FV is still at 60 degrees at present but I am being VERY patient ;^)
I'll report the SG later.

What did I forget? I got so involved in the whole process that I forgot to have a :drink: beer :drink: whilst waiting for the boil - never mind, time for that now! :drink:

I also forgot to mention that I'm very pleased with the performance of my home made hop strainer. A 1metre coil of 8mm copper gas pipe with a series of small holes drilled into the underside that fits into the boiler tap. managed to extract all the liquor and only needed about 1/2 litre to be returned to the boiler before it cleared. Excellent.

Nice post. Looks like your boiler is working well.

Is it ok to Aerate your wort out of the boiler before it's chilled though?

You won't get the best aeration doing it when the wort is still warm as the solubility of oxygen decreases with increasing temperature. It might be worth aerating again once it has cooled.

Enjoy your :drink: !

I am intending to do an aeration once I've taken the SG and before I add the yeast. Next thing on my 'do it yourself' list is a cooler.

OG came out at 1.050 at 28.5 degrees which equates to 1.052. Added a bit more water to make it up to 25 litres as Mr Wheeler says it should be 1.049.

Out of the FV today and into the conditioning cask. FG was 1.011 just as Mr Wheeler predicted it should be. :thumb: Tastes nice and hoppy as well. :D Also my STC1000 controller has arrived from China so time to make a box of tricks ready for my first attempt at AG. :hmm:

Errrm, an observation!!

Not criticism, just provoking comment.

Has allowing the boil to cool naturally, therefore slowly, caused the flavour depth and bitterness to over-strengthen rather than cooling straight away with a coil or plate chiller after the boil ?

:wha:

I'm not is a situation to answer that question as I don't possess a chiller (coil or plate) yet to compare with. I do think my output is slightly darker that Summer Lightning so you could beright.

I'm thinking that my next brew will be a similar recipe to this but using Perle hops instead of Challenger. One of my favourite beers is VPA by Vale Brewery in Brill, Bucks and I know they use Perle and Golding in that. I am using yeast from them so I'll have to give it a go. With any luck I may have cobbled together some form of chiller by then. :wha: In fact, thinking about it, I've got a very small section of finrad with hose connectors on in the shed, I could give that a try! :thumb:
