As part of my brewery clean and prep I need to give my plate chiller a serious clean up and then sterilise. It was given a good rinse the last time it was used (May 2011  ) but feel a need for a deep clean before I risk using it again.

Has anyone done similar? I seem to recall a thread talking about using a pressure cooker but cant find it now?

Cheers, Wez

I have One of these Plate heat exchangers. Back flush with hot water after using, then Hot Oxiclean, then Hot water, Drain . . . put in pressure cooker for 15 minutes, then fill with boiling water and cap. . . . next brew day empty out water and it's ready for use.

While it may sound fiddly . . . and is a lot more difficult than spraying a hose over an immersion chiller, once you have a routine it is straight forward, and very easy to do.

For deep cleaning, then you are looking at filling the PC with HOT Caustic Soda, and allowing to sit for a time. . . . I actually circulate the solution for a good 30 minutes to 1 hour, then drain and backflush.

Then a Hot Acid solution for 30 minutes to 1 hour (Again I recirculate) . . . then drain and back flush.

Then recirculate hot water, to check if any nasties have been shaken loose.

As part of the routine I reverse the flow during each of the Caustic and Acid washes.

Finally a good rinse, followed by cooking in the Pressure cooker.
