Hi,

Can you use 2L and 500ml Coke bottles (or equivalent) to store beer/stout?

If so, do you just use the screw cap and are there other things to think about when using them?

Can you use them even if you prime the bottle?

yeah you can use both with the screwcaps. you will just need to store the bottles away from light to avoid 'skunking'. the only down or upside depending on how you look at it is that with 2L bottles you will have to probably drink it in 1 go! ive tried bottling in juice bottles and have always thought the beer tastes weird from them, glass bottles all the way!
 
Cheers...I would prefer glass but I'm too tight to buy empty bottles!!

My stock pile is growing though...
 
have used 2 litre bottles and had no problem so far other than having to stack on there side in the fridge and if you have alot of sedement store up side down till sedement settles in the lid then crack open upside down inside a plastic bag to stop beer going all over the kitchen re tighten and hey presto no sedement and clear beer
 
We used 2 litre coke and lemonade bottles with no problems for months they can stand around 100psi so no worries about exploding. Just prime as normal and use the screw cap. Only thing though we found it took longer for the beer to condition.
 
Asda smart price still water bottles cost 17p for 2 litres and they are (unsurprisingly) full of water that you can use in your brew too! I have used these for all of my brews, and because it previously held water there are no other flavours in there. These are also clear so I keep them out of the light, but at 17p per bottle you can bottle a full 5 gallon brew in fresh bottles for less than £2. Probably not as nice looking as Magners bottles, but they will tide you over.
 
if you are gonna use water bottles please check they are pet bottles, it will have it stamped on the bottle, this means they will hold a lot of pressure without deforming, every water bottle i have used ends up with a deformed base so standing them up is a no no so i now dont use them.

Hi, I just wanted to check if you can bottle a fizzy cider in a 2 litre coke bottle. Haven't done it before and don't fancy exploding cider :cheers:

Yep no probs at all, they can hack up to 80 psi. Best thing to do is leave around 3 inch air gap when filling then squeeze bottle to expel air then tighten down the top. Leave in the warm for a month then somewhere cooler to let it drop perfectly clear and all the yeasties to drop out of suspension. The bottle will naturally go back to its original shape once it starts to carb up - another indicator your cider is carbed up. Also prime with 1 t spoon of sugar per 500 ml. :cheers: :thumb:
 
PET bottles will allow CO2 out and O2 in so they are no good for long term storage. You'll just have to drink your beer quickly. :drunk:
 
+1 for using 2 litre PET lemonade or water bottles with no issues. They are a useful test bottle to see how a batch is carbonating up as well!
I tended to do 1 or 2 of these per batch being bottled and they are quite convenient for home use.
note the points on keeping out of direct light and maybe having a limited shelf-life but otherwise a good way to go.

I found my beer was flat when I bottled in still water bottles but fine when I used carbonated water bottles, different lids I think!!!
