I was going to make a couple of brews but have no nutrient and cannot get it locally, I have read on the forum that you can use tomato puree, is this as good as yeast nutreant or just a stop gap?

Found a post on the subject of tomato puree by Moley -

I've read that too, but I'm bu99ered if I can understand why it would work. :wha:

A search on the Harris forum brought back nothing, so google it yourself and report your findings.

Now Marmite's a different matter, yeasties like their B vitamins, but just a quarter of a tsp to the gallon.

I will get a small jar and give it a go. :thumb:

Marmite Ingredients

Yeast Extract,Salt ,Vegetable Extract ,Niacin ,Thiamin ,Spice Extracts ,Riboflavin ,Folic Acid ,Celery Extract ,Vitamin B12

Why not just send away to a on line shop?

Because being a tight barsteward i begrudge paying as much for the postage as the product.

We have a wilco in the next town so when i am running low on several things i visit the shop, its a few miles away so not worth going for just one item.

Our local health food shop stocks s few bits and pieces for home brewers but they often run out of things and only order when they need a lot of stuff so they get free postage.

Epsom salts and citric acid, or a tub of Andrews liver salts all same stuff.

Thanks for the tip, can i ask why some recipes say add yeast nutrient and citric acid if they both do the same thing?

Andrews has citric acid already in it so you dont need much added, Epsom salts is an ingredient in Andrews but has no citric of its own so just use either. Vitamin B1 Tablets are a nutrient too but bought from homebrew shops they come in 3mg sizes - i just got some brought out from uk that are 100mg in size so now i need to crush them to get a lower dose percentage, normal dose would be 2 3mg tabs per 5 ltr or gallon etc.

I've been using tomato puree for sugar wines for ages and the yeasties work a lot faster than the traditional powder form of nutrients.

Earlier this week (tuesday) I put on a 5.5 gallon sugar wine and used the powered nutrient. The starting SG 1.075 and to day it is only 1.060. If I used the tomato puree it would be nearly done, usually 6 to 7 days.

Thanks Robbo as i wasn't sure i got some Youngs Nutreant its what i have always used so am happy to keep using it. :thumb:

yep tomato puree has been popularized by the "d" word when making a sugar wash - it gives the yeast something to eat rather than nothing, from what i gather.

The only problem with using tomato puree as a nutrient, it takes an absolute age to clear, you need it to be very cold. I don't know about anyone else but I don't have the room to put a 7 gallon tub into the fridge.

The wash does turn a red colour after adding the puree but after fermentation has finished it turns to a light beige and doesn't taste of tomato.

Thanks for correcting my spelling mistake, i posted this on my phone so it was not highlighted, i hope in the near future i notice you have made a simple mistake and can feel a right smug git by correcting you.

Sorry. You'd be quite entitled to and I doubt you'll have to wait long.

I've seen the tomato puree idea on here before and it sounds like a goer.

I'm trying to ferment 5 gallons of sugar wash and SG reading has only gone down by 23 points in nearly 6 days which is pretty bad. Powdered nutrients are ok with 1 gallon musts/ciders and wines, but I'm struggling with a 5 gallon ferment.

Going to go and get a tube of puree tomorrow.
