have you ever seen the character KEVIN by harry enfield..... boy or girl it happens at the stroke of midnight on their 13th birthday

Not in my family. My cousin's daughter hit her teens at the stroke of midnight on her eleventh birthday. My cousin's makeup bill quadrupled overnight, and her daughter also now refuses to go to school.

Blame the " do gooders " in our Society for turning children into adults too soon. .... and parents of course for assisting their kids to try being adults too soon.

IMHO of course

We used to play Iron Maiden at full blast to drown out our youngest as he would cry when put down he soon started falling a sleep even with the music loud
And the funny thing is now he's 23 loud Iron Maiden still puts him to sleep!

And my HO too.

Being a parent you can't always be a friend too.

You've got to remain in charge and ensure that your kid knows it isn't ok to seek attention/ act out etc.

Some general things I try to stick to with our two, but often fail:

Never ask them a yes/no question to which there is only one correct answer.
Say 'when you've [done what you should be doing] then we can...' rather than if.
If you're going to say yes to something, say yes straight away.
Avoid making empty threats.
Label the behaviour (good or bad), not the child.

All that said, I realise how divisive parenting can be and I'm sure all our friends bite their collective lips at the different ways we each go about it.

My toddler will be two in Feb and the big thing I have learnt is to do things your own way. We have taken ideas from people but adapted it to suit us.

well we won the battle yesterday but it certainly wasn't the end of the war, 10 minutes into tonight emotional blackmail torrent.

ive been treated to high pitched screeching tonight!! horay!!!

edit - well I never, just as I posted this all went quiet... I don't want to say that I am really relieved but...

thank god for the small mercies

Good luck and keep perservering. We had the same, 2 years of 10-12 hours peace a night and then all He'll broke loose one night. She literally just changed personality. We went with rapid return. You don't say anything to little one but everytime they get out of bed you go in their room, put them back and leave. Pay them as little attention as possible whilst you do this. They soon realise that they don't get a hug or even eye contact and decide to go to bed. Took us 75 mins the first night, 40 the next, then 20 and then back to normal again. Is easier if there are two of you to alternate the job, that way your patience lasts longer. Then enjoy a well earned pint or two. Best of luck!

ive got 4 little darlings it happens with all of em

our 3 year old douglas cracked me up the other month coming out of his room in his plastic knights armour and sword after being sent to bed, the missus asked him to go to sleep he burst out of his room in the placcy armour shouting "NEVER!!"

Four? Jesus, we have one 'little darling' and I've put put the kibosh on any more. We seem to have a good week then a bad fortnight at present. Sleeping through the night for the good week, screaming through the night for the bad fortnight. Luckily there's another 'young dad' in the office going through the same, so we can compare notes.

My eldest had not long got out of that stage. With the help of the occasional babysitting from my parents life was on its way back to something resembling normality. All the screaming, crying, kicking, throwing herself to the floor and the most awkward of moments, was forgotten or never fully remembered because of how tired I was at the time.

Somehow my wife convinced me to have another and she has just started that phase with the teething that medical professionals will tell you "only lasts a night or 2 and we'll be fine" (thats the biggest lie anyone ever told me) and its all coming back to me now. Arrghh.

If I wasnt such a wuss the snip would be on the cards

Congrats, but I'm sorry to advise you that in 6 months time you will look into a mirror and you will seean old worn out version of yourself staring back at you, his blood shot eyes telling you he is saying "what have you done to me".

It is all worth it for the first time they give you a hug through choice though.

We have a littleun on the way in march but I have enough bottles to see me through the tough times. probably not...

Oh god last night was a chore, little one woke up at about 11 and would t go back to sleep. Eventually at 2am she fell asleep. So glad I've got a 5am alarm set.
