I bought a party star tap to use with my mini kegs . it as been working fine the gas lasted a keg of O S H . moved it to a hobgoblin keg and gas run out after a couple of pints. When I went to change the gas cylinder , screwed it in and suddenly the gas shot out from the back of the plastic cylinder holder freezing cold too . I noticed a tiny hole at the bottom of the holder a neat hole looks like it was drilled out . Is this a relieve system or a fault with the Tap I wasted a gas cylinder but tried another same thing but not as bad and tap is working now but lots of gas wasted. Anyone else had this problem and anyone know how to solve the problem . The 16g cylinders are not easily obtainable only found them online so cost plus postage , dont want to waste the gas.

Ron (better days)

This happened to me when I tried to attach my first CO2 cylinder. It may have been because the cylinder wasn't aligned properly. I wasn't entirely sure that my next cylinder fitted exactly, as the housing didn't screw right down on the tap.

I made a heavy brown porter with lots of crystal and lots of chocloate malt in it in october. I put half in mini kegs and half in bottles. I polished of the mini kegs a week or so ago and am now starting on the bottles. I must say the mini kegged brew was far supperior to the bottled version

Muntons Wheat beer, my second attempt with the minikeys and much improved over the last. Great head, smooth and carbonated nicely :-)

Ive got a keg thats been priming in the warm for a week, and have been given one of these mini kegs, would i be able to syphon 5ltrs off into one of these and seal it without any trouble?

I noticed yesterday Morrisons have Old Speckled Hen and Hobgoblin for sale at £15 each. Tempting!

They are the ones that can be reused right?

Hobgoblin can't not sure about OSH. And at that price they aren't on sale. Cheaper in Iceland or online.

Sorry meant they can be re-used if you have the proper Bung. You can't use the party star to drink it though

I've recycled the old speckled hen one I got from Morrisons.

Check if the bung in the top has a red central plastic knob with the rubber bung piece in black - those bungs can be removed and re-used.

If the top bung is round the other way (ie black central piece) then those bungs can't be re-used from posts on here.

Oh, and 99% sure you can use the party star taps with the recycled minikegs from the supermarket, as long as you have a spare grey bung with the punchable plugs in the middle.

My minikegs I got with the party star tap kit from leyland homebrew look exactly like the supermarket kegs including the pull/twist taps in the bottom of the keg. The pull twist taps must not interfere with the draw tube of the party star once its inserted.

Hope this helps, buy an OSH one and give it a whirl - to remove and re-use the top breath bung you pull the red bit up and off, use a spoon handle to carefully push the exposed inner piece into the keg, then just pull out the black rubber bung. Then rinse out and collect the piece you pushed in. You can put the breather bung assembly bag together to re-use (but not with the party star tap).

Cheers Spapro.

I love OSH, so it's no real loss if I can't reuse it (but it sounds like I can).

Only slight concern is the "drink within 3 days" thing.

Lovely looking pint, how much priming sugar per 5l minikeg did you use ?

I used 13g priming sugar (think it's dextrose). 12.5g was the calculation but my scales are only in 1g increments.

The primed kegs were left in the fermentation fridge at 20c for 2 weeks then transferred to an unheated room at about 15/16c for a further 2 weeks. Fridge 2 days before tapping and all good :)

Retains a good head too.

12.5g of priming sugar is working well for me also (ie 12-13g !!!)

Does look very good yours, A*

Ha ha. Its a great feeling when that first pint gets pulled. All of a sudden you can have a pub style pint.

How long are you guys finding the beer lasts with the party star? Just tried a bit of one I tapped about a week and a half ago and it's got a really bitter and horrible taste. I did give it a blast of co2 the last time I used it, although nothing happened when I tried again today and it wasn't really pouring under pressure, so maybe the gas ran out.

These are my preferred method of dispensing these days. Easy to clean and store and transport. Much better than messing around with corny kegs and heavy co2 tanks. Empty kegs are only about £7.40 and I add these to my orders to get the total up to the free delivery value. The co2 bulbs last about a keg and a half and can be bought quite cheap.

Rob,or anyone else, has anyone noticed with one of the type of kegs you can turn the red twist bit on top and reseal the keg,it self carbonates again and pours a perfect pint even a day or two later, my other keg you have to push the red plug in and that kills any carbonation after the first night, i know, i know, get a party star tap :)

I've got the party star tap and tonight poured my first pint of Cooper's Stout.
Apart from being one of the best kits I've done so far the pour from the tap was fantastic. It looked like a pub poured pint of Stout with a creamy light brown head which stayed to the bottom of the glass.
I had to pour another couple just to make sure it wasn't a fluke.
More mini kegs for me.
