Just wandering if anybody no's a place to buy distilled water cheap. It's for calibrating a ph meter. Cheers

Just to jump on the back of this question as it's been answered!

I've read that distilled water should be used to calibrate a hydrometer? My hydrometer is 2 points high for tap water at 20C (1.002 as opposed to 1.000) I'm trying to establish if this would be considered 'in calibration' against distilled water. Of course the simplest thing to do would be to go get some distilled water, however the easiest thing to do is to ask someone on here what they think

Distilled and di-ionised are the same thing, i have a marine tank so make my own di water. I'll check what the reading are with the di and tap water tonight

Mine also reads 1.002 in water at 20℃ we have some distilled water at work, I'll bring my hydro in tomoz ;-)

I'll be interested in this, as my Wilko hydro reads 1.004 in 20 OC tap water, but my one from The Range reads 1.000 so I don't know which one is wrong!! :-?

1.002 is about the equivalent of 0.26% abv. So I'm not to concerned.

I'd has it a guess that your range one is correct and wilko one is out, by 0.53% abv.

If you had a brewery the taxman would be asking questions concerning your abv's. ;-)

Seems we may get a result before I get back to work tomorrow. I'll still test mine though.

I wonder if I put the same amount of sugar in a sample of both distilled/de ionized water and plain water. Test with refractometer .... Would there be a noticeable difference?

I generally use a hydro and a refractometer and compare the two. Judging then what the mean, mode or average (God haven't said those in a long time) is then take an informed guess.

I'm fairly sure that if a hydro is out then it will be out by the same amount across the range. As you work out the abv by the difference between original and final SG it doesn't really matter.

Or it could be your hydrometers are calibrated at a different temperature? What do they read at 15°c?

So if I'm out at both OG and FG will it balance out or am I picking it up wrong?

Providing the scale on it is correct in the first place, a hydrometer that reads 2 points high should always read 2 points high regardless of liquid density. As ABV is calculated on the difference between 2 readings you should still get the right result.

Back to the subject of distilled water...make your own...I bet you have every piece of equipment that you need in your kitchen.
If anyone is interested, Ill post a Youtube video on how to do it, believe me it only takes 10 mins.
Equipment needed....1 saucepan with a lid with the handle in the middle, 1 cup and saucer, 1 bag of ice.
Its so very easy

Just re-read the OP. You need the correct calibrating fluid to suit your PH meter. This is way to fine for HBing. Go and buy a Sailfert PH Test kit. About £6.00 from any aquarium shop ( good for 50 tests)

Would like to see that.

Distilling and deionisation are two separate processes, with the same aim. In fact deionised is purer than distilled. So two roads to the same destination perhaps?
