Seen as Blue Moon is one of the only beers my girlfriend likes, I thought I'd have a go at a clone.

I'd seen a few conflicting recipes, but eventually found a post on an American forum by someone involved in the original recipe at the brewery.

Anyway, I settled on this:

500g Maris Otter
400g Wheat Malt
100g Flaked Oats

5g of Hallertauer hops @60 mins.

0.5 tsp of Crushed Coriander Seeds @10 mins
1/2 Orange Peel @10 mins
0.25 tsp Irish Moss @10 mins

Cooling now, fingers crossed it's something like the original....

I want to try something similar myself. I love Blue Moon and would love to create something along those lines. Anyone used orange extract before? Could you use that instead of the peel?

I think they might have been pulling your leg with the potatoes

I've seen other recipes that used marmalade, but not extract. Don't see why not though, it'd just take a bit of experimenting.

The original recipe calls for powdered dried orange peel. But that's not so easy to get hold of.

All done and into a demijohn now (well, a couple of hours ago, had steak and a beer since).

Had a little bit less loss of water this time, had just over 4.5l at the end, so no need to top up.

OG was 1.062, a little higher than Beersmith predicted.

Pitched safeale S04 yeast. First time using this yeast. Think I'll leave it on the drainer overnight, incase it kicks off.

Would love to try brewing this, Blue moon is one of my favourites. How much boil water did you use for the grains?

I'm still learning how much to use with my setup, I lose a lot in the boil.

But 4 litre of mash water then another 4l sparge gave me 4.5l after the boil. Spot on for what I wanted.

I have no idea if I'm doing things right, I only bottled the first beer using this technique yesterday (my first AG was an ingredients kit on which I followed the instructions the letter).

Maybe I should take photos next time in case I'm doing something silly that will affect my beers.

Well, finally got round to checking this, it is down to 1.011 after three weeks (something came up last weekend so couldn't sort it).

Gave my girlfriend the trial jar beer, she says it tastes like Blue Moon already - so I guess that's a success! And at 6.7% it's a bit stronger than the original...

Bottling it now, just need to get it carbonated!

I have an empty 5L water bottle and a long weekend off coming up....I think I might be doing 2 brews now! Blue Moon is also a favourite of mine!

I think when I do it again, I will put a little more orange peel in.

It is very close though, so I'm happy with it. Going to try a bottle this weekend.

What size batch (into your demijohn) did you produce with these quantities?

The reason why I ask is because I'm thinking about doing a blue moon clone myself but I will only be doing a 10L batch.

Not my recipe, but he's used about 1kg of grain, so I'd imagine he's getting ~5 litres of beer out the other end...? (See the first post here: http://www.thehomebrewforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=51779)
