Evening all

I am going to attempt a batch of Brewdogs Elvis juice on Saturday and from the recipe it says add grapefruit peel.

My question is when do you add it to the mash or to the boil?

Any help or advice would be much appreciated

Cheers guys

No just peel from fresh grapefruit

If it was me I would add it to the boil, I am no expert this is purely a gut feeling, don't really see what mashing it would achieve, either way if you go forward with this please keep us updated as I can see where you are heading with this.

I'm drinking a bottle of Elvis Juice at the moment. Whatever you do with the grapefruit peel, try your best not to get that distinctive 'washing up liquid' taste I'm getting from Brewdog's effort! And as it's not my first beer from this glass this evening, I'm certain it's the beer and not my glass  eeewwww:-?

Right I am guessing that the outside of grapefruits are not as clean as you would like (i would wash with you usual sterilizer then rinse before you peel) and I am sure I have read in the past about vitamin c causing head retention problems.

Thanks for all the advice guys I think I am going to stick with my plan of adding it in the last 15 of the boil then hopefully with the hops and yeast I'll archive the desired flavour 😳

I did a white ipa recently and added zest of two grapefruit for last 5 mins of boil. Worked out well. If I brew it again, I'll do the same.

So Toffee you only used the zest, did you get a grapefruit flavour coming through in the beer, what hops did you use?

This was a Commercial bottle, not my Homebrew :) That experience has done nothing to improve my general impression of Brew Dog. I can still taste the Fairy liquid :-(

I used citra and simcoe. Difficult to say as there is a lot of citrus in those already...I certainly got grapefruit aroma, and a subtle extra grapefruit taste. If you wanted more, maybe add some juice too. But I have read to avoid the white part of peel as will impart bitterness

Something in grapefruit and grapefruit juice can affect the uptake of some of the statins used to combat high cholesterol.

In view of this, maybe beers with grapefruit additions should be served with a "Health Warning".

I used to take a Hayfever tablet that warned not to be taken with Grapefruit. I think it can affect a number of drugs.

Just a quick update I added the peel in the last 15 min of the boil. It has been in the keg for just over a month and I can say from my opinion it smells and tastes fantastic.

I didn't get the haze that I was expecting so overall I am very happy with the results.
