Hi there,

My dishwasher heat setting is '55 - 65C'.

Is this higher enough to sanitise effectively?

Thanks,
JT

I wouldn't say so personally. Unless you out some starsan in it. But then you run the risk of it going MEGA FOAM. Also I don't think a dishwasher will get inside the bottles.

I'm prepared to be proved wrong mind you.

That aside its bottle washing and sterilising for you like the rest of us [emoji6]

I've been cleaning and sterilising using StarSan, but I suspect a wild yeast infection so I want to 'go nuclear'.

As a 'reset' I think I'm going to dishwasher them and then oven them too!

I do mine in the dishwasher with a couple of squirts of Milton. Ours does a 70° wash. I also however rinse out bottles straight after use, and once they're out of the dishwasher they get star-sanned with the bottle washer as well
It's probably overkill but works for me!

If you want to go nuclear, oven em. I oven my bottles as standard anyway. 150C, 40mins (from turning the oven on, cold, till you turn it off again). Job done. :thumb:

Michael, or anyone know if the grolsch type bottle top porcelain bits are ok in the oven to sterilise?

I know I can remove them from the bottles but it's a bit of a feck about.

I stopped using the dishwasher for cleaning bottles, as they are very good at baking on tiny particles of food inside the bottles....

I never sanitise swing tops, in fact I never even clean them I just take them off oven the bottles and chuck them in some star san before putting them back on the bottles. Seeing as their porcelain I'm guessing they'd be ok. You'd need to take the rubber bit off of course and I've found getting it back on again a right PITA

I read on hear from a chap who sounded like he knew what he was on about, that water at 80 degrees sanitises bottles.

Also a quick google search says:

"Sanitizing Methods
•
Heat. There are three methods of using heat to sanitize surfaces – steam, hot water, and
hot air. Hot water is the most common method used in restaurants. If hot water is used
in the third compartment of a three-compartment sink, it must be at least 171
oF (77oC). If
a high-temperature warewashing machine is used to sanitize cleaned dishes, the final
sanitizing rinse must be at least 180
oF (82oC). For stationary rack, single temperature
machines, it must be at least 165
oF (74oC). Cleaned items must be exposed to these

temperatures for at least 30 seconds."

Drat. Just ordered some sterilising tablets. Wish I'd seen this thread and read about no rinse solutions first.

I take your clasps have oxidised with the starsan then as I know mine have as I had left them in the solution too long 🙃

If they are actually "porcelain" then "Yes" oven temperatures up to 200 degrees shouldn't affect them. However, it will be wise to let them cool down gently as a lot of heated porcelain won't survive being plunged into cold water.

However, if they are just very hard shiny plastic and not porcelain then they may very well deform when subjected to oven temperatures.

BTW the rubber seals on flip-tops almost certainly won't survive oven temperatures without deformation or bubbling. (This is on the assumption that they are made from the same material as Klinger Jar seals and I've melted those before now!)

What got me suspicious was when, using Star-San for the first time, I noticed that the jug full of flip-tops had built up a nice frothy head as I was bottling the brew.

Which is exactly why I now use Oxi-Chem for sterilising the flip-tops and then rinse everything in fresh water before putting them in the fridge to carbonate. :thumb:

I just boil mine now for ten minutes.:thumb:

I rinse bottles after emptying three times in hot water. That night they go in the dishwasher. Then into a cupboard. That's it. Never had an infected bottle of beer.

A bit OTT IMO but if it works for you then fair enough.

I wash bottles after use, then when I.ve got twenty to do I put them In the dishwasher and then like MyQul I put them In the oven when they.ve cooled down I put cling film over the top when I come to bottling day I put Star San In the bottle rinser give em' a blast of that job done. So much easier than how I used to do em' tubs of very hot water with Oxy clean & a bottling brush & then rinsing each one out three times. bottle cleaning day Is a breeze compared to what It used to be

Cheers Pete

My, very similar, approach.
