I recently made a Cwtch kit and it was super hoppy and tasty, one of the things that stood out was, the hop steep, you add hops and boiling water to the fermenter and give it some time then add the malt tins and cold water up to the final volume. I wondered at the time if this could be done with other kits? Could you add say 50grams of hops to the initial hot water just like the Cwtch kit? I thought that the heavy fermentation would cause the Co2 to drive off most of the aroma but with the Cwtch it seems to work. Any body had any experience of this idea, before I jump right in and add 50grams of Endeavour to my next brew.
 
I always dry hop towards the very end of the fermentation for around 5 days and never boil them,steep for half hour at 70C add the infusion and the hops tied up in a muslin net weighted with marbles.pre sanatised of course
 
Yeah that's pretty much how I dry hop but Cwtch adds half the hops as a steep in boiling water before adding rest of ingredients, I have a fair bit of endeavour here so am going to steep 50g and dry hop a kit.
 
Will have to try the cwtch kit, I will try the hops in fermenter first, sounds good idea plus dry hop as well
 
This is know as hop tea I done them a number of times. They work great at adding flavour and some aroma to a brew. You can add the hop tea at bottling time. I haven't done a kit for years but I've got a wherry in the FV at the mo and I'm going steep 20g of EKG in 500ml of 65C water for 20 mins then add the tea to the FV along with the (batch) priming sugar.
Dry hopping does the opposite of hop teas and adds aroma and some flavour. You can of course do both. I have a 5L AG pale ale that I used columbus for the flavouring hop. I'm not that keen on the taste so I dry hopped it with simcoe and will add some simcoe hop tea at bottling time. Hopefully I should be able to change the flavour some it's more simcoe-ey

How would you describe the flavour of the Columbus? I was planning on doing a Zeus hop tea and dry hop with 5L of the BIPA I have bulk conditioning. Apparently Zeus is very similar or the same as Columbus. I've heard adjectives like 'dank', 'weed', 'herbal'.

Yeah, kind of dank and murky would describe it well. I originally bought it to use as a bittering hop, which I used most of it for and had 7g or so left. I was planning to make a 5L batch anyway so I thought I'd use it up.
