Hi guys, so just planning ahead as I am getting a Ace Boiler for Christmas and with some time off between Christmas and new year would like to give it a couple of test runs.

Its the first time I will be brewing larger quantities (20L) so just wanted some reassurance on the recipes.

Please keep it simple
Your first recipe should read
4kg Maris Otter
500g Crystal 70

And you have lost me on your hop schedule.

I take it you are going to use

15g EKG @60 mins
15g Challenger @ 10 mins

I understood it...so it must be simple...for people who know what they're doing and would scrutinise the recipes I would think all the info is needed so it can be successfully crunched in brewing software...incase the op was struggling with such things....as I did.
Just an observation. ..no need for tin hats...

Is 6 row normal in Cali Common? Have to be honest I don't fully appreciate the difference between 2 and 6 row but 2 row is more common (as it were)

Quick Google suggests it had higher diastatic power than 2 row so often used in conjunction with a large percentage of speciality malt. And gives a grainier taste than 2 row. On that basis I don't see why you would stray away from 2 row in the Cali common.

I think it’s blasphemy to use anything other than Northern Brewer in a California Common, and I have no idea what 6 row barley is. Otherwise everything looks ok to me!

I think it’s a straight copy and paste from Brewers Friend or similar.

Not that I’m aware of. Anchor, at least, state that they use 2 row.

I got a headline view and I can always read the section I skipped over in Mastering Homebrew.

They look fine enough, the 6-row caught my eye as unusual too. I didn't see the OGs for these brews, can you share them and total IBUs please?

What yeasts were you planning to use for these? What scale did you brew at before?

Apologies i just copied over the recipes from brewers friend as i thought it would be interesting for people.

Apologies as well, i hadnt spotted i put 6 row instead of 2 row.

I was wondering whether i had to stick with northern brewer but as i have used it in a lot of brews recently, i felt like i wanted to go for a bit of something different.

I will put up the other info tomorrow when i get on a computer.

See, you have already made a difference as all my numbers would have been off if i used 2 row!

They all use alot of crystal, I don't mind that but it could be high for some, also you use more in the pale it than the bitter which is unusual at least in my mind.

I was thinking that 20% crystal (albeit light) in the pale ale seems like quite alot, but if it is a recipe you've done before on a smaller scale and liked then it should be fine
