Wonder if anyone can clear something up for me from Brew Your Own Real Ale At Home. The recipe in it for Guinness Extra Stout calls for 37g Challenger and 25g Target at the start of the boil but putting the figures into Brewer's Friend gives a much higher bitterness level than the book, 73IBU to 45EBU .

I tried searching the forum because it was in the back of my mind that I'd read something about this before but with no real success, is the difference coming from the standard of the hops they had available back then or is it something else? I'm guessing I can just scale the hop quantities back on BF until I get it to where I want the level to be so no real issue but thought I might be doing something totally wrong somewhere down the line.

I get exactly the same with the Batemans Dark Mild in the 3rd edition. The book suggests an EBU of 24, brewers friend gives an IBU of 33.83, which is quite a difference, as I thought the two were interchangeable?

Wheelers book might be based on whole hops. If you have put pellets into the BF calculator that will give a higher yield. Hop IBUs vary from year to year, source to source, and you are using info specific to your hops not a typical number from a recipe book. So your BF estimate must be more accurate in my view, and I suggest you modify the hop quantities you use to take that into account.

It could be a typo, the 3rd edition says only 35g of Target [23L version] for 45EBU. No mention of Challenger at all, or any other hops.

I was going to say this. I made it in November and only used 35g Target, which is all my book has as the hops.

Cheers lads I've just removed the Challenger from BF and that's much more like it should be.
