So you think that Abu Hamza should equally be allowed to preach hate in the UK?
He was preaching hatred and violence, and directly radicalised Islamists that went on to murder.
Incitement of violence was always where the line was drawn.

Also she was banned under terrorism laws, so the authorities are misusing this law.
Slippery slope.

You're equating who with Abu Hamza now? Lauren Southern? Pug Guy?

If it's either of them - SERIOUSLY?????

I'm simply saying that the term "free speech" is often misused and misunderstood. Free speech does not give an automatic right to say whatever you like - amongst other things, exclusions are made for anything that incites hatred and violence for example.

Frankly, with all the nonsense that has gone on in the past, I'd rather the enforcement of rules erred on the side of caution irrespective of ethnicity.

I have never listened to anything Lauren Southern has ever said, indeed I've only heard of her in the past few weeks. But from all the unsubstantiated information I have heard of her, I can't see that she has anything to say that is worth listening to or is worth giving a platform to here in the UK.

Slippery slope.

I agree to a point, because the slope is slippery in both directions. If you don't nip these things in the bud, who knows what might fester and grow? What if she plants an idea in someone's head, which they take a step further. I suspect that's how a lot of extremist ideology starts. As above, better to err on the side of caution.

It was in one of the newspaper reports I read yesterday. I'm of the opinion that no subject should be off-limits for comedy and I sincerely hope there is more to this as if there isn't, then the potential is there for a very slippery slope.

I think journalists these days mostly have their own political agenda, so they link one thing with something else often without substance.
If the guy has or had any kind of extremist views, judging by the hammer and sickle tattooed on his chest, they were of the far left.

The thing is you equate Lauran to Abu Hamza, which to me sounds a bit perverse.
If we are looking at scales of extremist ideology, I would put her views less extreme than mainstream conservative islam.

The Nazi pug case is ridiculous from start to finish, it got 3 million views on utube and no one complained the police then went looking for someone whos offended and made out he was a serious recruiter for the Hitler youth or something.

For a start, he's not a comedian. He's a vlogger, and describes himself as "a professional shitposter".

He didn't "tell a joke" he taught his girlfriend's dog to raise it's paw, like a Nazi salute, whenever he said "heil Hitler" or "gas the Jews", and then gleefully videoed the results.

I'm in two minds as to whether or not that ought to be criminal, but let's not try and pretend he told some harmless joke and this is a nefarious attack on free speech. It's in a grey area between poor taste and criminal, at best.

He says his girlfriend thinks the dog is cute and he wanted to make it the most un-cute dog in the world maybe next time don't video yourself repeatedly saying "do you want to gas the Jews" while laughing at the dogs actions.

Some posts on this thread genuinely horrifying. No wonder free speech, and freedom in general, is in such short supply these days.

Uhuh. If he'd been doing this in a public place you'd be horrified. A guy on a highstreet yelling "gas the jews" while his dog does Nazi salutes? Everyone would be up in arms.

But somehow videoing yourself doing it and posting it on a public forum is completely different. Except of course it isn't different at all, people just like to pretend it is.

As I said, I'm in two minds as to whether this ought to be criminal, but this hyperbolic nonsense about this being an attack on free speech really needs to stop. Freedom of speech does not mean you get to say or do whatever you like, whenever you like, wherever you like, completely free of any consequences.

There are loads of jokes, comedy videos, stand up, dodgy opinions you can find publicly on the internet or in books, DVDs, film that would not be acceptable on the streets so yes putting it on facebook is totally different, mainly as you don't have to click on it look for it and can stop it at any time while you can't if its in the street.

It's odd that this one has been singled out I'd agree. The guy's clearly a moron, but does he deserve to be prosecuted for this? Probably not.

What is even more hilarious than you not understanding the concept of free speech is your condescending tone, projected bravely from behind an anonymous computer screen, explaining to us all how something online should be treated the same as something in the street. I think that's called irony.

Uhuh?

Actually I'm with Thumper on this. I'm fed up with people not taking any responsibility for their actions or the consequences by claiming it's their right or it's free speech. Some people (like this moron) need to grow up. However, if they did grow up, then Jeremy Kyle wouldn't have any guests left for his show.

Does the principle of freedom of speech not essentially come down to uncensored media and the freedom to challenge and petition government? As opposed to for example North Korea, where I believe they aired the final of the last world cup, in which North Korea beat Brazil in the final.

Being fairly thick skinned and able to give as good as I get, it really doesn't bother me what people say or where they say it.

I find the sexualisation of children much more cause for concern, like pop stars etc who directly market kids, creating material for the kids to view which really isn't age appropriate. But if this was brought under control would it just be another attack on freedom of speech?
