Howdy folks...

Had a Brewdog Mallow Mafia on the weekend, it was so good, I mean really good !

It's being brewed... No questions

Found the recipe on DIY dog which calls for 30g Cascade at the beginning, and 30g Cascade towards the end. This will impart, at best, 25 IBU into the beer however the recipe has an IBU rating of 75 ?

This can't be right can it ? Something is wrong here ?

I did not think that the coffee dry hopped imparted any bitterness to boost that level ?

Thoughts ? What am I missing ?

I think there are a few mistakes in their book. 75 IBU sounds about right. I made a RIS recently and accidentally added too little hops. I boiled some more hops in 2l of water and reduced it to 200ml before adding it to the FV after fermentation.
I cant believe coffee would add any IBU's. Looks like a great recipe.

I agree having tasted it it was certainly more than a measly 25IBU but how do they achieve that with the recipient ?
In other areas they have described the beer as 75 as well...
I think they've not published the actual recipe personally and have done with many of them

I think a few people have stumbled on the same problem in different DIY Dog recipes. From recollection, Brewdog's fancy/pro brewing tech achieves super high hop utilisation so they often use less hops to achieve the same IBUs than a homebrewer normally does. I'm not sure if all recipes just use their usage levels or whether they adjusted most of them and forgot some.

Edit: Check post #10 here https://www.thehomebrewforum.co.uk/threads/elvis-juice.62728/

Yep, their hop quantities are often nonsense for a homebrew scale so just have to bump them up to hit the IBUS. Then there's the conflicting data issues. Jet Black Heart is listed as 47 IBUs on the recipe, but the hops only make like 20, online JBH is listed as 30 IBUs... When I cloned it I went with the 30 as 47 felt too high, it was a great beer but I think 47 might be closer to the truth.

Tidy... Nice one thanks guys...

Might add a clean bittering hop to boost the IBU level up towards 50IBU. If I get anywhere near to how good this beer was I'm be amazed anyway

Only other I've done was a Jack Hammer (love that too) and got no where near it
