Put this kit on tonight - someone had gifted it to my brother in law (who has no interest and no equipment) - right on its use by date so thought what the heck. Not got high hopes - made up as per instructions and chucked in extra pack of S-04. Thing is the kit came with what can only be described as oak sawdust which frankly just made a flippin mess.

Looking at the floating stuff on the top of the Sample Flask I reckon that you should have taken the OG before adding the "oak chips"! :laugh8:

I've read somewhere on the Forum that the sawdust type of "oak chips" addition resulted in a bitter taste so maybe moving it to a secondary FV after a few days would help reduce any bitterness.

Enjoy! It was free and if it finishes up a terrible brew it can always be returned to your Bro-in-Law with the instruction "Leave it to mature for a few months." :laugh8:

Made this a while back and liked it so much I've got another to brew in time for the colder months. Don't worry about the saw dust, it all adds to the flavour.

When fresh it can be a little overpowering but condition for a couple of months and it really gets good. It's at least as nice, if not better, than the Innis and Gunn beer that I suspect it's trying to clone.

Yes that's why I posted the sample tube pic. Ironically the instructions call for the oak to be put in with the extract pre-dilution so would be there when taking OG but I hadn't read the instructions and threw in just before yeast so if I had have used my noggin could have taken the reading unfettered by woodchip.

So I popped a bottle of this open on Saturday and it has mellowed out a lot now (brewed in March). The oak has died down a bit and the underlying beer seems to be drier, suggesting that the sweetness I was previously getting was from the oak. Much more drinkable therefore but remains a very rich beer overall so 750ml was enough for me. I'd still plump for a little less oak if I brewed again.
