My first attempt at an all grain brew BIAB is now up & running. Just ~12L litres of a simple stout. Maris Otter, flaked barley, roasted barley, an ounce of hops (half Admiral, half Bramling Cross as that's what I had) grain steeped for a couple of hours then boiled for half an hour with the hops on the cooker. Birds in the garden are now happily munching on the spent grain. I need to wait a bit longer.

It'll be well worth the wait acheers.

What ratio of MO, flaked and roasted barley did you end up with?

6 MO : 2 flaked : 1 roasted

1.5kg + 500g + 250g Partly because the LHBS does 3kg bags of MO & 500g bags of other grains.

Sounds good, how come you steeped the grains for so long?

I was making it whilst fitting in/around "normal" family activities on a Sunday. So had to be out of the kitchen before Sunday lunch went into the oven and couldn't get back for the boil till after we'd eaten.

:D happens me on a Sunday too.

Good idea with the spent grain and the birds, I must try it. Bird feed isn't the cheapest

Ah right that's fair enough, no harm in it, just longer than needed for conversion so i was curious. I feed my spent grains to the in-law's chickens.

What temp did you "steep" at?

Started at mid sixties. My pot was put on a wooden bench with a couple of old jumpers wrapped around it. I do need to get a better thermometer that I can see where the needle is more easily especially when it all gets steamed up.

And tonight we cracked open the first bottle. Well, bottle bomb would be more appropriate. Then poured the remaining half pint into a glass. My son tried it first. Screwed his face up. I then tried it & did the same. Not drinkable was the verdict.

Oh well, I've a dozen or so bottles to put down the sink tomorrow whilst I'm attempting to make "Ptolemy Tyler's 'Innkeeper'" - hoping to get something reminiscent of Landlord - but I'll settle for something drinkable.

Nobody, who never made a mistake, never achieved anything.

Oh dear, gushing always kicks up the sediment and makes my beer taste bad. How cold was the bottle? Getting it really cold before opening will calm it down a bit, but if bottle bomb wasn't hyperbole then it'll probably still gush everywhere. Good luck.
