Something I thought about but for the effort it takes and the time they will last on the bottles, it personally isn't for me.
A different coloured label on the caps of the different brews works for me, which i reckon is as good as a letter or number written with a marker.

I started to use different colour crown caps to identify different brews. Unfortunately Wilko only does gold but my not-so-local homebrew shop does several different colours. Or get them online https://www.brewuk.co.uk/containers/bottling/corks-caps-labels.html
I just use chalk pens and write on the bottles when i do actually bottle anything. That way its easy to tell, it washes off, and i am not messing around printing labels and stuff and i can concentrate on drinking........
I use different colour caps for each batch.

Same here, brewing small batches to try out lots of different things though and there are only so many colours available. Splitting batches to try out different yeasts too and different colour bottles helps there. Going to check out those sample bottles of house paint at some stage, can probably just get black/white caps then and give them a dab.

Sharpie on the cap works for me. I have got it wrong on occasion but even then it works as all beer is good beer.
