Hi,

I've just done my first coopers lager 1-can kit for a mate, brewed to 23 litres. I used 1kg of coopers brew enhancer (2) instead of sugar as the instructions recommended. I forgot to take initial SG, but couldn't get anywhere near the suggested FG of 1008.

After a week, it was down to 1012, 2 weeks the same, so stirred and gave a final week. Still 1012, so I batch primed with 190g sugar and bottled it today.

If SG was 1038 as some searches indicate, I could have a lager at c3.5% which is pitiful - anyone else had this issue?

Cheers,
Al

I would have thought your OG would be slightly higher at 1.040 to 1.044. That would get you close to the 4% abv expected from a kit like this which is standard lager strength of most macro lagers. If you are wanting higher abv you would need to add a little extra sugar with the brew enhancer or use a slightly different combination of the 2. Also generally most kits are brewed short to 21 litres to give a little more depth and abv

Hi!
+ 1 for brewing short - it gives a much better body.
Since the maltodextrin in the BE2 is unfermentable, it would raise your FG by about 4 points (based on 39 points per pound per gallon), so you are bang on the suggested FG of 1008 plus the points from the maltodextrin.

great, thanks chaps that explains it. the lager is for a mate but if its decent I'll brew the next one at 21 litres
