Hi all been brewing wine and beer for some time but the mrs wants me to have a go at making a cider. Im thinking of doing a strawberry cider for her and have bought all the ingredients to fill one demi john. My question is do I add the syrup at the start of fermentation, somr three days in, or at the end when batch priming. How much would you use at the start and how much to use to prime.

Thanks

There are others far more qualified than me to comment but I've just set a cider off using cherry [emoji523] Lowicz.
I've put half in from start and will use the other half to batch prime [emoji39]. In 5l DJ.

As PVT makes sense - if you use the other half when batch primeing you will retain aroma and taste that could have been lost if all used at the beginning

Update: Today I'm going to use 3 bottles of the syrup at the start - if needed I will add another for priming

I have used both raspberry and cherry syrup in my turbo cider and usually add it all at the beginning (1 bottle for a 5 litre batch). She what drinks that stuff is more than happy with the outcome.

How will you keep the abv under control with 3 bottles mate ?

When I use two (plus a third for priming) I have to use a fair bit of water to keep it from being rocket fuel 😯

I didn't even think about to be fair, about a week after it starts bubbling I will add more water to the mix

I finished making 2 tc's and a kit in the early hours as after having some fiery ginger beer I felt the need to rest when I got by a warm radiator hehe

Blimey - Roddy , I thought you'd left us for a minute there and I was going to have to start making up my own WoW and TC recipes !! Phew [emoji106]

Roddy, how much of a 440ml Lowicz syrup/apple juice would you use in a 4.5L batch of TC please?

I remember you said 440 ml Lowicz has about 370g of sugar. Add that to 4L of apple juice and I'm looking at 726g sugar in 4.5L. About 8% ? :-?

Would you cut back on Lowicz or on the apple juice to reduce the abv to something less lethal?

Cheers.

I used a whole bottle in a 4.5l SMJW with 1l each of RGJ and AJ and with some added sugar it came out over 13%. I think next time I might use half a bottle and for a cider some of the rest to prime.

Hi, I am going through these past fruited TCs and would like to ask, or confirm...

For a 5l demijohn
Is it 3 litres AJ
Half bottle of syrop
1 tap pectolase
1 tbag brew
Any yeast or a cider yeast?

Then when finished at the other half of the syrop for priming? Or is that too much priming?

Thank you!

When I do a lowitcz TC, I use 3.5l aj and half a bottle of syrup.
Ferment it out and use the other half bottle for priming.
Comes out about 6% depending on the yeast I use.

Very fruity buggers, super easy to drink on a hot day and makes you fall down after 4 bottles.
But I cannot stress this enough, leave it 2 months in a cold cellar!!!!!!!!!
The taste after aging is incredible
I seriously need to get my **** in gear as I never seem to have the patience. But when I do forget a bottle or 3 under the stone slab in the cellar and discover them after a few months. Jeeeeeesus, they taste incredible

Thanks so much! Just to check, in your experience to date, that half bottle of syrop for priming adds fizz without any exploded bottles? :cheers3:

I use 4 bottles at the start of brewing, then sweeten with wine sweetner before bottling. And I agree that leaving it for a while improves the flavour no end. Normally comes out around 9% in a 22ltr brew with 15ltr Lidl Apple juice

Can I just check...a half bottle of syrup for PRIMING is getting on for approx 170g sugar, in about 5 litres...

Is that correct?

I have one recipe suggest ³/⁴ Oz (21g) for a Demijohn....and another suggest 13g/litre...

I am getting ever so confused!

Also, will priming with syrup make it taste fruitier?

Thanks
