I added the Amarillo version of Geterbrewed's single hop ipa all grain kit to my last order as a bit of whim and to see what it would be like. If it turns out ok then £13 might be a bit of a bargain compared to when i put together my own recipe.

I must say, I was a bit surprised when i brewed it last night - it has ended up A LOT darker than I was expecting. I know you can get black / dark IPAs, but i would have expected it to say on the website if it was expected to be this dark. I've also significantly exceeded the target OG (1.068 v 1.053).

Time will tell I suppose

Do you think the kit has been labeled wrong it looks so dark and with you getting 15 points above their SG it is a lot of efficiency hike

This thought had crossed my mind - I might drop them an email and ask the question

I had a citra single hop kit a couple of years ago and it was really dark. IIRC it’s intentional but it did take away from
The flavour of the hop IMO.

Stating OGs on AG kits is pretty meaningless IMHO, as everyone's setup will have different efficiency so will produce a different OG. I always have to adjust recipes and amount of grain when I do a brew to hit the target OG, as my efficiency is usually 68% vs the 70-75% usually used by recipe designers. Sounds like you have a much more efficient setup than the recipe designer.

The brew does look dark tho, what grains were in the kit?

I made an Eldorado single hop kit from them and it too was really dark, I struggled to finish it, there were roasty notes that really jarred with the hops.

I've done two of these single hop series from geterbrewed, both equally as dark. Overshot the target OG on both. Both ended up around 6%. Both turned out very well.

Would definitely try more.

Sounds promising. Hopefully it will turn out ok
