Anyway, I sometimes wish I'd used a blow off tube (some yeast goes mad at the start) but normally the airlock is fine and I do kinda like the bloop bloop sounds :)

I brewed a wheat without an airlock. I put the lid on tight and opened it very slightly. Taped a bin bag around it and that swelled like a balloon. After 5 days i closed the lid and vented a few times before i kegged.

Only time I needed a blow off tube was with my first beer, a Brooklyn Brewshop starterkit.
Most recent brew was 20 L tripel in a 25 L bucket. I try to keep 20% minimum headspace. Works for me.

If I am doing a gallon of wine in a 2-gallon bucket then I either leave the lid on with a part not tight down or place a sanitised muslin cloth on top with the lid just resting on that. This will be for first few days or at least until the excitement dies down then transfer to secondary (DJ).
I used to go straight for the DJ as a fermenter and after a number of leaks and messy airlocks, I then changed to using a blow off tube which was much cleaner and easier. Once nothing was being blown off into the tube then I replaced it with an airlock.
