Completely New to This! Advice Needed.

Hi everyone, i'm Eliot.

I am interested in brewing ales, predominantly. Particularly coffee and chocolate ales and stouts, because that's what I enjoy drinking the most. However I am willing to consider anything, I have a very open mind.

Here's my situation in a nutshell. I am single & live in a 1 bedroom high-rise flat, but I want to know if it is possible to get a small brewing operation on the go, when space is at a premium, or will I need to enlist the help of a friend who has the space to lend me?

If anyone can recommend books or sites designed for absolute newbies, I would be very grateful.

Hi Eliot

You dont need too much space to get started, i bottle my beer and need space to store all the bottles tho. The fermentation bucket etc does not take up much room, if you are only doing 1 batch at a time. Im quite new to brewing and i have found this forum to be very useful. Good luck with the brewing!!

It is absolutely possible yes!

Some others may suggest starting with beer kits, but I would suggest having a look at this thread.

Welcome Eliot,
If you start off brewing from kits, then you only need space for a fermentation vessel (FV) usually 23L.
Even the next step up from kits, partial mashing only needs a stove top to boil a large pan.

It will get you off to start in homebrewing, and it won't take up much space. If you find you like homebrewing you can then buy more kit to suit your budget and space, and that will extend into grain brewing if that's what takes your fancy.

Welcome. In my short time here, I've been offered loads of very useful advice :)

To date, I've been doing most of my work in the bathroom with the FV in the corner of the 'box' room. The FV footprint isn't great. Storing 40 bottles for ~four plus weeks probably requires the most space resource (though mine go in plastic crates that stack) so you might want to think where they might go. Ideally it's two weeks warm then two + weeks somewhere cooler. There are ways of doing smaller batches if that's a problem.

A one bedroom apartment is plenty big to do some brewing. My wife and I are living in an old school bus with less than 300 square feet and I managed a brew last month.
