My ESB with Northdown and EKG hops fermented with Wyeast 1469.

It's a work in progress and the first time I've used Northdown hops. I really like the spiciness and think with a few small tweaks it'll be where I want it.

Having a little tester of my Bohemian pilsner (very close to Greg Hughes recipe) it is very nice if ever so slightly too sweet but a really nice malty flavour. Think I'll up the battering hops slightly next time. Very pleased considering the transfer on brew day was a nightmare and I feared I had ruined it.

Off out to town so I'll be getting a few pints of Skinner's ales such Lushingtons, Porthleven, and it if gets too messy I'll end up with a Christmas Fairy!! oh I say.

I was pleased last night to see that La Tasca have revamped their lager range from the predictable Amstel + Estrella. Now they've got one I've never seen before: Palax. Very nice, full flavoured and properly hazy like a German Kellerbier. If you find yourself in a La Tasca it's one to look out for.

Today Mrs Clint has roped me in to hosting her stall at Wrexham Christmas market....it's freezing!
Payment....off the lead at 4pm to the beer tent!
Huzzah!
Will report back.

I was in "clear stock" mode while designing recipes, and decided to brew 2 identical, fairly simple bitters, one with predominantly Fuggles, and the other exactly the same, but with Styrian instead. As these 2 hops are cousins, I thought it a good way to see which I prefer.

Wow, they are very similar. Given a few minutes, I don't think I could say which was which. Side by side though, the Fuggles is richer and earthier, while the styrian essentially has less depth. I don't think I have a favourite though.

Drinking my first effort back into brewing after a three year break. This is a Wilko Velvet Stout with added extra 500g Medium DME, 500g dark brown sugar and using Tesco spring water. Very nice too! a little on the stout side for my taste but I'm sure it is very correct. Trouble is... I have acquired a taste for a spoonful of LME in the glass hence the foam on side of glass.

Which Styrian variant did you use?

On offer in the Christmas market...San Miguel and John Smith's....I didn't bother..
I'm now home, got the feeling back in my feet. Tried one of my APA that I've purposely kept my hands off...a repeated malt bill with wheat, oats and maize but hopped with Apollo and Amarillo... absolutely smashed it!!

To be fair, Styrians are low Alpha acid and would be better brewed with a bittering hop like Admiral, Target or even Pilgrim, or one of the dual purpose hops - Challenger and Northdown being good examples. Great that you like a simple bitter with Fuggles. Very English indeed!

The description is fair. It's a very heavy brown with rather too much alcohol for my taste.
