A friend of mine's blue touchpaper is Andy Murray!
He absolutely hates him with a passion! It's quite funny, but he has a point if one cares to listen. What drives him nuts is Mr Murray's revesal of opinion regarding the support of the nation having once stated clearly that he didn't want English support or supporters. Apparently he ratracted that point of view, or said he'd not meant it... once he'd won wimbledon and was on the meteoric rise pathway to stardom.
I totally get that one has "roots". If Asked I'd say I was a South Londoner, then a Londoner, then English, then British, then European(controversial!:-)) Andy Murray was entirely right to be a proud Scot, and I applaud that point of view, but his comments were perhaps foolish, and clearly needed addressing once the PR types had got to him and decided he needed to be more PR TV friendly. The thing is... my friend would have had solid respect for him if he'd have maintained his views/
Having said all that, I'm not a fan of tennis at all, but am of Formula 1 and Boxing. It seems these days with the massive salaries and earnings.... sports people are under pressure to be neutral and efficient, even in personality. Lewis Hamilton for example.... without doubt a driver of the calibre of Senna, Fangio, Moss... but dull as ditchwater!

Wow, I can't believe after thirteen years people are still hung up about a throw away comment he made as a teenager, something that probably any football fan would say about their local rivals.
I say fair play to the man. He's dedicated his life to his one passion, much like many of us have with beer. He doesn't need to play anymore - he and his family are set for life, but he obviously wants to and looks devastated to not be able to. How would you feel if you developed an injury or condition that meant you couldn't brew or drink beer anymore?
Tennis or sport may not be your thing, but lots of tennis fans, and I include my late father, never got to see a British man win Wimbledon in their lifetime. After achieving what he has when you consider the horrors he experienced at school, I think he's a pretty decent role model.

Hold on.... it's my friend who hates with a passion, not me!
I really have no time for tennis, so it doesn't affect me either way. I have every respect for his abilities and talent, he's achieved something that the UK has not for decades and decades.
As I mentioned despite my love of formula one, and total respect for Lewis Hamilton, I still wish he like Murray wasn't as dull as he is.
I'm sure neither of them care about my opinions anyway.............
I see he may be having a hip resurfacing operation, i hope they don't get the feckers who did the roads round here or he will never walk again. 
He won't be playing tennis after that ....

He was at the school of the Dunblane massacre. 8 at the time. His brother too .
I had to go teetotal for 18 months due to an acute condition which struck out of the blue. The lack of ale was horrible really, but I got over it. Sat necking tea and pop whilst the missus is rolling around inebriated and starkers is ok, but not quite so much fun when one is sober.
