Hi all,

I've been kindly given a tin of Coopers IPA at xmas, but all my experience so far has been AG doing small-batch stovetop BIAB.

Instead of using DME/LME and/or sugar, I was thinking of doing a mash with 2kg-ish of Maris Otter (to yield about 10L of wort), then adding the kit (plus about 10L of water) to that, anyone done similar who can comment on the results?

Should I consider lightly hopping the AG portion during the boil, or will the hops in the can extract be enough?

Will probably dry hop too, but I've read differing opinions on this kit and if the hopping out of the can is enough for an IPA style.

Would appreciate any experiences or ideas before I get started! :)

I did this a lot a couple of years back and it works well. The kit will do for bittering, but I would add hops to the AG boil or as a dry hop etc. Here is a useful link:

I did similar to this several times last year. Worked for me :) I overdid the added hops a couple of times, so I'd be inclined to be cautious.

Got this on last night, used 2.3kg Maris otter and 200g dextrine, mashed for 90mins then boiled boiled for a hour.

Added aroma hops (10g centennial at 10 and 1min), may dry hop but will decide after tasting.

Missed my OG by a mile though (1.037, kit says 1.046ish), it's fermenting now (used NBS west coast yeast) but tempted to boil up 500g DME and add it after cooling.

If the DME is unopened, you could just chuck it in, I suppose. Boiling would make sure it dissolved, though, which a lot of people would like to see.

As far as the efficiency goes, the mash is more successful if the temp is stable and if it gets stirred every 30 mins. You could try mashing in an oven, if the pot fits. The lowest setting at 50C works very well indeed.

Thanks @Slid, I've got my target OG in recent AG brews so I suspect I just underestimated the amount of fermentables needed. Stupidly I didn't check the gravity until after adding the kit syrup and additional water so its hard to be sure.

Decided to leave it alone as it's bubbling away well now, hopefully I'll get a session ipa out of it!
