Good morning fellow brewers. I'm the newby on the forum having signed up yesterday. Fascinated by the threads I've read and how everyone is so polite and supportive of each other. Have been brewing in one way or another since the age of 16 and the more I learn, the more there is to know, if find.
Relocated to France 3 years ago with my French wife to scrape a living with a couple of holiday lets and have the leisure and space to brew and experiment with beer and offer introductory advice to anyone who wants to get started in brewing.
We live in exciting times. There's never been so much to brew and so many new styles and new materials available. Much of this thanks to American brewers, I think. My first all-grainer was an attempt at Newcastle Brown Ale from a recipe by Dave Line. How things have moved on from there.
Looking forward to chatting with you all.
Mike

We're away to Brittany on holiday this year. I'll probably mostly drink cider (very partial to Breton cider) but are there any local beers you'd recommend?

Hi, Oneflewover. Where abouts in Dorset do you hail from? I used to live in Poole.
I'd try Coreff. The breweries in the north-east, it started in Morlaix, but they moved. It was founded under the watchful eye of the late great Peter Austin of Ringwood Brewery who wenyt on to found Shipyard in the USA and several others. Their Blonde is nothing to write home about but the IPA and Dramm Hudd are good beers if too strong for a session or for driving. If your near Rennes, you might look out for Skummen of Acigné (a suberb of Rennes). They make some lovely hoppy beers although I found their New England IPA undrinkable- a bad bottle, I think. The micro-breweries and bières artisanales, I've tasted so far do not bode well for Breton brewing, but I haven't tried them all by a long shot. There's a beer festival in Saint-Malo beginning of March.
If you're passing by Béganne (between Redon and Vannes), pop in and say hello and try a pint of the proper stuff.

Cheers, loads of great info there.

I'm Dorchester way, been here for years now. Can't recall quite where we are going (other half booked it) but it's not far from St Malo. Thanks for the invitation!

Haah, Brittany, my favourite holiday destination. This year we go back to Cancale. Crêpes salées et sucrées, fruits de mer, cidre brut, kouin aman. I look forward to it.

Did you get to the beer festival at the corn exchange this weekend? My man in Havana tells me that Corbel by Eight Arches brewery was the best beer of the show. Never tasted it, but I'm looking for a recipe so I can brew some.

Just noticed that a recipe for Corbel is in the Camra's Essential Home Brewing book I got for Christmas. I'll have to have a go at it athumb..

A lovely part of the world. I was born in Quimper and every summer of my childhood was spent there. @chthon knows the good stuff!

Me too. My copy of the same book arrived this morning. Got all the ingredients apart from Chinook and Ahtenam hops so will have to wait for those to arrive.
There are some very odd recipes towards the end of this book- makes Randy Mosher look like a very conservative brewer. (with a small c and no offence intended)

Welcome to The Forum.

Be careful who you invite to visit though!

We pass through St Malo on Monday 4th March on our way to Severac where we have a bit of land. We intend to stay for about 10 weeks and it's only 21km from Béganne so .... ?

It would be a shame not pop in for a cup of tea and a biscuit and say hello. Maybe make some inroads into the small-batch winter experiments, too. Good time of year to get down to 44 before the grockel season officially opens. Not that we're, unduly afflicted in these parts. Perhaps you could send your email address via Ange (I think it is) if you don't want it public and I'll get back to you.
