Hi all, had a productive day today, brewed up my SMaSH Nelson this morning and bottled up a batch of Mainline Bitter from Foxbats recipe on the recipe forum.

Anyway it went pretty well

Recipe

3kg Marris Otter

Mash in at 70c, kept temp at around 66c for an 60mins. Mash Temp up to 75 for 10 mins. Mash out, sparged with 3.5l of 75c water in another pot with sieve, once drained through put back in pot and brought to boil.

10g Nelson @ 60mins
5g @30mins
5g@ 15 mins & 1/2 protofloc tab
5g@ 5 mins
15g@ flameout

Chilled in sink, took awhile but gave me time to bottle the other beer.

Still having trouble with the siphon so picked up a lot of trub annoyingly.

Pitched in Safale -4 english ale yeast at 20c gave the FV a good shake beforehand. That was about 1300pm and bubbling nicely! :-)

OG of 1070

I did something similar this weekend;

5.5kg MO extra pale
200g flaked oats
1kg Flaked wheat
20g Magnum 60m
I chucked 60g of NS in when the wort got down to about 75c

1.060 no idea how it will turn out :)

Nice one , am i right in thinking the oats will improve body/mouthfeel? I've seen oats used lots in stout recipes etc.

Sadly this was the worst beer I ever brewed. Tasted like white wine. If you like white wine you're laughing though! :laugh8:

PS - I hate white wine.

I started putting 200g of oats in my beers and the head I started getting was fantastic, i did a couple kit AG without them and low and behold no decent head so back in they went :)

There was nothing wrong with the beer, in fact it was actually one of my best brews.

The only problem was the flavour, so tart and winey. I put the question on a Facebook page as to what Nelson was meant to taste like and there were loads of comments about people disliking Nelson, etc.

ah ok good that's what I was hoping for :)

mines a bit winey too, drinkable though I made mine with 1kg of wheat as well, I think I'll use it again just needs some more hops to balance it out a bit maybe?

Citra is a good choice. I use Galaxy in my recipe which can be a bit hard to find and expensive depending on the time of year. Motueka would also work.
