First beers were Sunday lunchtimes on the Long Life ("brewed for the can"), followed by Double Diamond when I was large enough to pretend to be 18. Graduated to "stout and mild" - half of Courage Mild with a can of Mackeson, in a pint glass, because you'd always get more than a half. Can't shake that dark beer craving even now...
 
I grew up in South Africa, and we had no ales, only the local lagers - Castle Lager and Lion Lager. On returning to the UK as an adult, I was unaware of the joys of other styles of beer, and stuck with the lagers - the usual suspects at pubs - Fosters etc.

About 10 years ago I tried my hand at home brewing and also tried ales (as I didnt really have the ability to lager beers at the time) and it opened my eyes to what I had been missing. My wife describes perfectly the difference between an ale and a lager, 'it is like eating a meal compared to drinking water', sums it up for me. Just such a shame I missed out so many years of drinking decent beer!
