When I saw the example trapped in a tiny bottle and being waved about to show the cameras I immediately thought of the old man who declared ...

"When I was a lad I could go into that wood over there and shoot as many as six snipe in a morning. Nowadays I'm lucky if I even see one!"

... and thought "No wonder that bee is almost extinct!"

Doubtless, they promptly killed it and preserved it as a specimen, as they always do when they find something they thought extinct...

Yeah, scientists can be wonderful sometimes, gotta make sure you have a specimen to replace that mouldy old holotype...

I loved that video. It brought back memories of Nigeria, even though I never had the pleasure of being bitten by a centipede!

I arrived at the camp I was to live in and was shown to my room, where I discovered that the bed was standing in four bowls of water, the legs of the bed were wrapped with double sided sticky-tape and a fine net was suspended from the ceiling and stretched out about a metre above the mattress.

"Why?" I thought and decided to sleep with one eye open and the lights on. By the next morning I understood exactly "Why?" having killed over a dozen millipedes and centipedes (up to about the size of my forefinger) as the ambled across the floor of the room!

The next evening (using a dinner-knife, the heel of my shoe and some newspapers) I managed to hammer paper into every crack I could find in the concrete walls and floor. This reduced the kill rate down to a respectable one per night and they were pretty small by local standards!

Happy Days? Not really!

The executioner wasp sting was so painful he said he nearly cried, having seen a few of his videos and how he reacts that must have been one painful sting.
