No problem, I thought you were suggestion it was a general view not a personal one. wink...

Been into Irish folk and trad for years, used to play quite a bit. I think of whiskey in the Jar and I immediately think of Luke Kellys voice not Phil Lynott. Plus Phil totally changed the words and left out most of the verses.

One for the olds -
Remembering Thin Lizzy's "Whiskey in the Jar" does not make us "old". At the most, middle-aged. AKA mature.
One day you children will understand this.

A chum who is somewhat older than me (he'll be 91 in a couple of weeks) can't recall "A Pub With No Beer". (He is, of course, familiar with The Drinking Song and much else from The Student Prince.) So, as people have started putting lyrics here, I thought I might as well join in - just for the children who were not around in 1957.

"A Pub With No Beer" - Slim Dusty, 1957 (Australian accent obligatory)

Oh it's lonesome away from your kindred and all
By the campfire at night where the wild dingoes call
But there's nothing so lonesome, morbid or drear
Than to stand in the bar of a pub with no beer.

Now the publican's anxious for the quota to come
And there's a far away look on the face of the bum
The maid's gone all cranky and the cook's acting queer
Oh what a terrible place is a pub with no beer.

Then the stockman rides up with his dry dusty throat
He breasts up to the bar and pulls a wad from his coat
But the smile on his face quickly turns to a sneer
As the barman says sadly the pub's got no beer.

Then the swaggie comes in smothered in dust and flies
He throws down his roll and rubs the sweat from his eyes
But when he is told, he says “What's this I hear?
I've trudged fifty flamin' miles to a pub with no beer.”

There's a dog on the veranda, for his master he waits
But the boss is inside drinking wine with his mates
He hurries for cover and he cringes in fear
It's no place for a dog round a pub with no beer.

Old Billy the blacksmith, the first time in his life
Has gone home cold sober to his darling wife
He walks in the kitchen, she says "You're early Bill dear"
But then he breaks down and tells her the pub's got no beer.

So it's lonesome away from your kindred and all
By the campfire at night where the wild dingoes call
But there's nothing so lonesome, morbid or drear
Than to stand in the bar of a pub with no beer.

For completeness, here is The Drinking Song.
(Mario Lanza did the singing, someone else acted the part; 1954. The Prince, in disguise as an ordinary student, is initiated into a student clique in a Heidelberg Bierkeller...)

Drink, drink, drink, drink, drink, drink, drink,
Eins, zwei, drei, fier, lift your stein and drink your beer,
Eins, zwei, drei, fier, lift your stein and drink your beer.

Drink, drink, drink,
Two eyes that are bright as stars when they're shining on me,
Drink, drink, drink,
Two lips that are red and sweet as the fruit on the tree,
Here's a hope that those bright eyes will shine
Lovingly, longingly soon into mine
May those lips that are red and sweet
Tonight with joy my own lips meet;

Drink, drink, let the toasts start,
May young hearts never part,
Drink, drink, drink, let every true lover salute his sweetheart.

Drink, drink, drink,
Two arms that are white and warm as the moon and the sun,
Drink, drink, drink,
Two hearts that will love one only when I am the one,
Here's a hope that those soft arms will twine
Lovingly, longingly, soon around mine
All I ask is the right to see
Those smiling eyes beguiling me;

Drink, drink, let the toasts start,
May young hearts never part,
Drink, drink, drink, let every true lover salute his sweetheart.
Let's drink!

Here's the words to the Drunk Driver I used to sing in my own pub in the late eighties/ early nineties. To the tune of the Wild Rover:

The Drunk Driver

I've been a drunk driver for many's the year

And I've spent all my money on whiskey 'n' beer

But now the law's changing lads, life’s such a drag

They’ve given the Po..lice the use of the bag

And it's no nay never, no nay never no more

Will I be a drunk driver, no never no more!

Last night I was making my way home from here

After drinking the most of a barrel of beer

The eyesight was dim and the first thing I saw

Was a bloody Blue Escort that belonged to the law

And it's no nay never, no nay never no more

Will I be a Drunk Driver, no never no more!

They stopped me and asked me a question or two

And said sir I think that you’ve had quite a few

Oh no says I Sergeant, that cannot be so"

But he gave me the bag and he told me to blow

And it's no nay never, no nay never no more

Will I be a drunk driver, no never no more!

He gave me a bag that was like a balloon

And said here’s the bag-pipes won't you play me a tune?"

I blew in the bag, and sure, what do you think?

Them dam crystals turned into a queer shade of pink!

And it's no nay never, no nay never no more

Will be a drunk driver, no never no more!

So it’s off to the station, a blood sample to get

No doctor was found so they called for a Vet

He couldn't be found so what could I do?

But to give them a sample of the Fresh Morning Dew

And it's no nay never, no nay never no more
