You cant blame the sat nav, YOU should know the speed limits on the roads.
Indeed I SHOULD, Quite often I can't remember what I did 5 minutes ago and I was using the sat nav as an aid because of my memory. So better that than have no clue at all! The road in question had no street lighting and looked to be a 50mph or national speed limit.

And if you didn't have a sat nav?
YOU are the driver not the sat nav.
It's not having a go at you but it's how the law would see it, too many people rely on sat nav and dont pay any attention to what is happening around them.

I rely on my sat nav to give me directions and speed limit and camera notifications as a truck and car driver i do pay attention but its not always easy to know the speed limit on long stretches of road where speed signs are few and far between especially if you do not know the area, a perfect example of this is when i was going into Droitwich a few years ago (before sat navs became commonplace) we were on a dual carriageway which dropped to 40 mph as we approached the town and i spotted two police in a lay bye with a speed camera on a tripod (remember when they were a common sight) as i was doing under 40 i didn't slow down and 2 weeks later i got a letter telling me i was doing 38 mph on a 30 mph road, i didn't see a 30 mph sigh and assume there was only one marking the change as why do 40 mph past a speed camera i could see far in the distance if i had known it was only 30.

My 54 mile round trip commute is mainly dual carriageway and Motorway. Almost all of the route is currently speed limited to 50mph. This causes major issues as almost every single vehicle is travelling at something between 45mph (speedo says 50) and 50mph. Result is just awful. All 3 lanes doing essentially the same speed and idiots weaving around causing random ripple braking. Can't see it reducing accidents. Lorry drivers are professionals. Car drivers are too diverse and basically too unpredictable for this to end well.

As I've said it's the law, and yes sometimes it's not signed enough but even in that case a sat nav wouldn't help you if it was as they dont change at the sign post so likely you would have been pinged anyway, same applies to temporary speed limits, a sat nav wont help.

I have used two different Garmin sat navs and can tell you they do change at the point the speed limit changes what would be the point in having it as a feature and making it a big part of their advertising if they didn't.

So you would be happy to use that as an excuse when caught speeding?

Why would i need to use it as an excuse i don't speed on roads i don't know and haven't had a speeding ticket since i first bought a sat nav with camera alerts (long before speed limit alerts were added) my sat nav tells me when the speed limit changes even if there is no sign, the ultimate in peace of mind for someone who drives for a living.

Well, I certainly didn't cry 'it's not my fault - WAH! ' - I look at it from the facts to reach a conclusion to try and avoid a repeat.

Of course it is down to me, although I have a nagging doubt that something wasn't right about the whole thing.

I know I have short term memory issues - Fact. Too much HB? ashock1
and yes the sat-nav is a useful aid although it too has issues as it's not always accurate (but rather its a judgement call about whether to use its info at any given time.)
The road did not look like a 30mph (no street lights) road out of caernarvon heading south - Fact.

I did some google earthing to see if there was a sign and there wasn't but the sat nav said 40. As I type this i wonder was the satnav actually right? but gently returning to the thread's topic  technology should be used as an aid and understood it isn't perfect, so I'm happy for speed aware technology to assist BUT I want the freedom to make the judgement call.

As an example mrs DOJ new car has crash detection avoidance and she gets a warning beep on a certain curved road on her way into work because there is a parked car which the tech thinks she might hit it. It measures steering wheel angle verses what the 'radar' & camera see. now it is annoying as hell when it goes of but it doesn't know that the wheel is going to turn a few 10ths of a second later. We don't turn that system off because the false alarm beep is a small price to pay for the extra protection it gives.

as for lane departure control, for that to work assumes readable lines on the road so only useful to guard against nodding off on motorways. (imo)

So glad to have the tech fitted but do not want its permanent use made mandatory and do not want any overide option to make driving LESS safe than driving a car without the tech.

chippy can I give this a triple like?

The voting is still 50/50. This suggests that we forum members are a well-balanced bunch. I'm impressed that some posters seem a bit extreme but in a polite way and there is no carping and no need for mods to police threads. There are many opinions on this thread that I do not agree with but I respect them. I'm an old fart so I am not interested in speed for fun anymore. When I was in my twenties I rode everywhere at 90mph when I could. A few near misses made me a lot wiser. As they say, there are a lot of bold bikers, a lot of old bikers, but not many old, bold bikers!

We try not to be too heavy handed when it comes to moderating the forum but the snug does tend to bring out the worst in members especially after a few home brews, several members have been banned from posting in the snug over the years and some have asked to be banned so they don't see posts in the new post list, *members banned from the snug are usually allowed to carry on posting in the other forums as most members get along fine in those.

*Some members have been banned from the whole forum but this doesn't happened often and is always a joint decision.

perhaps there should be a no-holds-barred forum for bigots and trolls? acheers.. I shall delve into the snug as a lurker.

I would define a bigot as a man with a strong opinion that you do not entertain. Or is it someone who does not understand that others may not agree?

I Think gordon brown knows the true meaning of the word bigot best ask him :laugh8:, as in "who let that bigoted woman speak to me"... (or words to that effect)

Most of the bigots and trolls left when we banned Brexit discussion and to help keep arguments to a minimum we remove posts as we see fit if anyone disagrees with this action we point them in the direction of the forum rules especially the one below -

This thread made me read an interesting article that said a cars speedo tends to overestimate speed due to a margin for wheel size, tyre wear etc, whereas a sat nav tends to underestimate die to turns, rises in road etc,
I guess it's a case of using sat nav and looking but yes there are not enough signs

This new regulation has been massively miss-reported.

There will be no requirement to apply brakes or reduce engine torque, the requirement will only be to ALERT the driver that they are exceeding the speed limit (as a number of cars already do). Manufacturers may choose to offer the option of a limiter (as some already do), but this will be down to them.

Secondly there is no way this would be used for tracking motorists. Car companies will be responsible for deciding how they implement the system, either via a camera, or sat nav data, or more likely both. The potential for snooping would be no greater than for any car currently equipped with a built in sat nav. Most cars already have stronger tracking capabilities than this built into the telematics features, but these are heavily encrypted and protected by legislation.

I remember having a hire car for 4 weeks when I was trekking down to Chertsey twice a week for work. M40 at 4am is a marvellous road, but not when you are doing -cough cough- making progress -coughcough- and as you sweep left after junction 6 the anti collision system is looking about 100meters ahead of you due to the speed and sees the central reservation as a parked car and jams your brakes on!!!
Nearly crapped myself, and the car behind me must have had a few choice words too!
