What's your beer strength preference?

  • I generally prefer a stronger beer (6% and over)

  • I generally prefer a less strong beer (under 6%)

The thread on strong beer - why? has got me wondering what sort of folk populate this forum, so I thought I'd run a poll to find out. Note this isn't another discussion thread, you can do that in the linked thread above.

So are you the sort who actually enjoys some alcohol in his alcoholic beverage, a manly lumberjack / viking type person, the sort who wouldn't eat an avocado unless it was deep fried and covered in vindaloo sauce and who thinks Predator is a bit of a girly film?

Or are you the delicate flower, shandy loving methyphobe sort, the type who used to order their steak extra well done before they turned vegan, who claims they're into heavy metal because they have a Nickelback album and is currently luuving their new celery juice diet?

I can appreciate a stronger one, but my go-to brews are <6%. Just as I can appreciate a vindaloo every once in a while (I just need more time to recuperate than when I was younger lol).

Unfair question, Steve. If I could only have two pints, I'd go for a ten-percenter, but I'd rather have ten pints!
 
Me too prefer a session rather than a pint or 2 to savour majority of the time

6% is a very good choice of threshold, to the point that I’m struggling to answer!

I went for over, as I ultimately would prefer a Belgian or a dark beer to be above there. For an IPA type hoppy beer I think 6% is a good strength. For pale ale, bitter or lager, I prefer below. But given my personal preference on styles errs towards the ones I identified as stronger, I voted for that.
 
Well, for me this was a no brainer! 6%!!!! Jeepers, I can't remember ever drinking a beer that strong. I really like the hopping on Brewdog Punk IPA, but at 5.5% ABV to me it is ridiculously strong. So I don't buy it, or brew anything in the same ball park.
You could have asked me a difficult question.
What would I choose between :
A. 3.5 - 4% ABV
B. 4 - 4.5% ABV
C. 4.5 - 5% ABV
You might guess that I'm nearly 70, with a long history of drinking draught bitters ( and the odd mild) in north of England pubs.
My answer - probably B. But it depends upon the beer - lighter bitters, definitely less than 4%
 
I think 6% is around the sweet spot for an IPA maybe darker beers can get better stronger but not tried enough to say, I never had anything 9%+ that I thought was great.
 
That was hard, I eventually went for stronger as i feel that's where I find lots of interest even though most of my best and favourite beers have been around 4%. I think I find most of my lower abv beers interchangeable as they're either a pale/bitter or a mild/brown and there as a tasty and refreshing drink where my stronger ones are more varied and feel more like a treat.
 
Your poll won't let me vote for both options! But on balance most of my beers are 4-5%. I don't brew over 6% often, but like to have something special lurking behind my regular beers, for when I feel an urge.
 
No preference either way. I like to mix it up and don't subscribe to the idea "beer has to be a pint", this nullifies the ABV issue.
 
It's not really a binary choice IMO, I sometimes do enjoy something stronger as a treat e.g some interesting Belgian brew or a strong DIPA, but most often it's something fairly sessionable so sub-6 for me.
 
I tend not to have sessions anymore so it's more a case of one or two beers here and there. On that basis, my interest is piqued by the stronger beers. Rather than being about pure strength, I find stronger beers are generally richer and more complex, or at least that's what I look for in a strong beer - can't abide special brew for example! Sessions would be all about a well executed 5%er.
