I bought an old keg off eBay, it's a 2.5G Spartanburg and with a bit of TLC I reckon that I can get it to hold pressure.

The thing is, I've no idea what has been in this keg in the past, it's stainless steel so I figure it's non-permiable so a good clean and sterilise feels like it'll be ok but just in case I could poison myself and my loved ones I thought I'd let more experienced folks tell me if I'm being an idiot first.

Anything I should worry about?

I would let it sit full with washing up liquid water for a while to let any nasties come out into that before a full clean and sterilise.

I'm using plastic water tanks under a van that had plant food in them.....ok so far...
But at least yours is mostly used for food grade items so just a long sit with a mild cleaner then more of a standard approach should be ok.
- Put something cheap in it first ! wink...

I bought an un-refurbished Corny that STANK of fanta :D

I soaked it in bleach solution for a few hours, took off all the poppets and valves and changed the seals, rinsed it all in the shower (missus was DELIGHTED!) then sanitised with Starsan and it's been good as new :)

good soak maybe oxi soak after first soak and get a full o ring kit for about £3 of ebay should be as good as new

Be careful if you use bleach, as above, on stainless steel as it can damage it is it is too strong or left too long.

I bought one of these: 120 litres with the intention of storing sacks of malt in it in the garage to keep the week rodenty beasties away:

It had been used once for macerating and exporting garlic in sunflower oil. I've tried everything, including bleach, to get the garlic smell out of it, but to no avail. Needless to say, I haven't used it for storing malt. Might have another go at it when it stops raining.

Thanks for all of the responses. I'll keep going then, it'll be a good keg to take to friends filled from my main kegs.

I was just worried that I could be in trouble if it had been full of weedkiller or something in the past.

When I was fishing more years ago and on the hunt for bait buckets the only ones that seemed to pop up were usually smelly ...the best way I found to get rid was to fill with soil and leave for a week...this cleared most. Not ideal for us but I wonder why it worked?

Plastic seems to be more absorbent of aromas, and harder to clean than steel
