Hi, i'm a relative newbie to home-brewing and am after some advice, i have just started a Simply IPA fermentation and would like to add 100g of Citra Hop Pellets
I have a Stainless mesh beer filter that i am thinking of putting the Pellets in and dropping into the fermentation bin
Would this be ok?
how long would i leave it in?
Would be grateful for any advice
Thanks

In kits with hop pellets, the instructions just say to lob them in and that they will dissolve. Has worked fine for me.

Hop pellets don't dissolve, they break down into tiny particle (bits). If the pellets are chucked in loose these bits may slowly sink to the bottom of the FV during the dry hopping period. Putting the FV in a cool/cold place at the end of dry hopping may help the bits to sink. However if you do it this way there is a chance that hop bits will carry forward, so the solution to that is to put a nylon mesh sock or special mesh filter over the end of the siphon tube. If you dont fancy the chance of hop bits going forward you can use a nylon mesh or muslin bag to contain the hops at the outset.

And the mesh size of your SS filter will determine if its any good or not for the hop bits. Anything thats visibly open won't work very well. However it might be fine for whole hops if you ever get round to using them.

I did this a short while ago. I brewed a bulldog brews standard IPA kit and dry hopped with 100g Citra. I used two nylon mesh bags which are deemed to be suitable for up to 100g hop pellets (less that 2 quid for the pair off fleaby) and put 50g Citra Pellets in each so they had plenty of space to expand. Chucked them into the FV when fermentation had finished after 10 days and left them in for 3 days. When I was about to bottle I sanitised a rubber glove and squeezed all the liquid out of them into the FV then bottled as normal. The bottles were kept warm (20 degrees) for 2 weeks then Cool for two. Just supping one now after being in the bottle just over four weeks and it’s really clear and tastes good too.

Thanks for the advice and links
i think i will try Markks method for this brew while i do a bit more research
would a 300 micron stainless sealed filter do the same job in the place of the nylon bags do you think?

I would say yes. But make sure its plenty large enough to allow the hops to expand and allow the beer to get in contact with the hop bits. And make sure it's properly sanitised before you put the hops in. Boiling it for 5 mins should be OK assuming it was clean to start with.

Just drinking my first IPA kit that used dry hop pellets. I think they were in there for 3 days before bottling and the taste is very bitter. Hoping this will calm down a bit after a few more weeks in the bottle.

I used one of these filters on the end of a syphon pipe and it didn't clog up, and did the job. -
