I have 2 old 1/2 size pressure barrels one of the caps (2" caps) is fitted with a "gas in"post which is handy topping up the Co2.

I'd like to fit a pressure relief valve even if it's just an elastic band type, if you know of any way to modify the cap and fit a pressure relief valve please post a link.

Many Thanks. Aamcle

Post a picture - if it's the s30 type they already have a pressure relief.

No S30, one is a solid cap the other has a corny keg "gas in" post for topping up the pressure.

Thinking about it, what is the diameter of the section of the S30 valve were the elastic band sits? If I know that I can make a thing, it will probably be a nasty hack but it will work.

If it looks like this with or without the pin type nozzle, the rubber band RV is behind the cylinder located between the nut and the cap itself.

Personally I would not be modifying any part of one of these pressure barrels, especially trying to fabricate a relief valve. However crude they are pressure vessels at the end of the day with the ability to fail catastrophically should things go horribly wrong.

One did, I took a jet of beer right in the chest when a tap failed catastrophically :(

As I said one is a plain solid cap the other has a gas in post, no S30 with or without pin.

Looking at the pressure relief system employed by some keys it's just an elastic band covering a hole in a post of a given diameter so if I know the diameter I can duplicate the system.

You would need to know what your maximum pressure should be, then add an inlet AND the pressure relief valve. Then pump it up to a measured pressure, and adjust the relief valve till it vents at that pressure.

I have a 4" cap that came with a s30 inlet - but it had no relief valve built in. It did have a brass indicator pressure relief valve that would read green when it held pressure, but red when over pressure and would vent shortly after this. But it was faulty and would often vent then stick open, and I would loose all pressure.
I am currently reworking the idea and fitting a schrader type inlet valve, and a spring type adjustable pressure relief valve.

I would think that 40PSI would be the maximum you could safely get to, but 30PSI may be adequate and safer based on this chart -

Any vessel designed for holding pressure should be marked somewhere giving the safe maximum. Maybe they forgot to do that? ashock1
I was just going off the chart designed for carbonation in kegs ?

My small barrel.is marked 15psi, I just want a blow off that will release pressure at say 10 psi.

I need an adapter, I'll start a new thread :)
