Hi, I have been using a 3kw buffalo induction hub for over a year to brew, on a recent brew day I noticed that the lead and plug were getting very hot to the touch. Today I had it pat tested and it passed fine, just wondering if anyone else who uses this hob has noticed the lead and or plug getting quite hot.
Thanks in advance

Dean

It’s more than likely fine. The plug and wire on my grainfather get warm during the boil. Even the wire on our kitchen kettle does a little athumb..

Thanks for the reply, rhats what I wanted really just to find out I'm not the only one.

You can buy heat-proof flex from the likes of Toolstation which will cope with the 3kw. Although it's not cheap. I've not researched plugs.

It's the current that's causing it to heat and for those who use extension leads to plug in these devices it can cause excessive heating.
Ring mains are designed to allow a maximum of 30/32 amperes to be be drawn from the circuit which then allows to plug in multiple devices which will rate from 3amp to 13 amp without issue providing your device is tested and rated,so it's like a big pipe which can hold a lot of pressure but when this reduced the pressure increases which then causes heat so make sure your electrical output is suitable for what you have in mind as not only is your cable heating the contacts are also heating therefore prone to fire risk and electrocution....be safe
Oh and a 3kw on a plugtop is excessive as we normally operate on a 230v domestic supply so if we take a 13amp plugtop and multiply that by the voltage we get 2990 watts which is 2,99 kilowatts which is at max and if you are using this for a full hour it will certainly produce heat.
Once you have a rolling boil dial it back a bit to a simmering boil and you will save on electric as well as 2.5kw should be ample.

@Gerryjo athumb.. Good points, both our inductions are not on the ring main. One on a cooker point and the other a 9kw converted shower point. However I also recently put our house immersion tank temp up a bit before brewing. It heats on economy7 rates. I can get 66-70* in my BIAB pot really quick clapa also insulated my pot(badly) and that was an improvement from the duvet,,,, New insulation next.
