I fear that I would have been hard pressed to resist dragging one of the little darlings off their bikes, and administering a damn good kicking, sorry, I mean stern talking too.
It's because of people like you who only want to talk instead of kick that the world's in the mess it is today.
Only joking, but you know what I mean. Well, perhaps the time for a stern talking to is water under the bridge.

The problem is if team of rugby players had been in the store and had dragged them from their bikes they would be done for assault, kids today are not scared of the police or anyone in authority and why should they be they are toothless..

What a horrible thing to happen - and how complicated to understand.
Yep, like jjesh I would have had difficulty controlling myself. If my wife had been injured, I know I could not have controlled myself. OK I'm nearly 70, so intervention might have been stupid........
My immediate suspicion is that that these guys - or people (all male???) - were on some sort of drugs. Nevertheless, I'm appalled that people could even dream this up, never mind actually follow through with it. Happy days!!!

I don't know if that happens a lot in the UK; I've never seen anything like it here in Detroit but, if necessary, start carrying a plastic 2L of vegetable oil and light that floor up when the time comes. The courts would be have a hard time trying to prosecute a customer for "accidentally" spilling a grocery item in a grocery store--"Clean up on aisle four, five, six and seven." Those bikes and feet slipping everywhere would be quite fun to watch especially on that well-waxed and smooth floor.
Should never touch one of the children riding their bikes though; it's the world we live in.

The other thought I had is that the attention-starved children want people to forward videos like this so probably shouldn't give them the time of day.

Problem is as chippy says. They can do what they want knowing no one can deal with them at risk of assaulting a child.

Last thought of mine on this, I hope.

The question I have is, why do these children feel they're no longer "part of" something--a school, a community, a city, etc.? It's only then that you get behavior outside of ordinary childhood pranks (I have a long list of my own at that age). This is, of course, omitting the outliers in either direction--some will be bad and some will be good no matter what.

Here, it's pretty easy to discern: children are left without choices; are abandoned, to a degree, by their parents; abandoned by the schools and societal institutions; left alone to be picked off one by one and preyed upon by the negative element in which the individual child will "lose" in too many/most cases against this group because it's one against the many. The result is you now have one group whose interests and loyalty are in opposition to another group.

I can say, it would have been possible for my life to have turned out quite differently had it not been for the structure and safety available to me and which I took completely for granted.

"Slapping wrists" or even harsh punishment, as pointed out as solutions, won't be very productive since it's not the answer to the problem. Those two methods only work on people who actually care about the group and would generally fall back into "contribute to society, not destroy it mode," even if you didn't do anything. The hooligans will not suddenly see the light and the harsher the punishment, the more it would drive a wedge between the two groups and be proven to them that society is the enemy. Fear is a poor teacher for such individuals (recidivism rate is dreadful).
No easy solution here but there always is one.

Great post Dave but i have to disagree the problem already exists and the lack of police and their powers means there is little deterrent, we only have to look at knife crime figures over the last few years it used to be a bit of a shock when you read someone had been stabbed now its almost a weekly event especially at the Southern end of the country, the lack of police powers may be about to change - https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-49309112

@Chippy_Tea

If I get your meaning, I agree there is no doubt that we do have to catch the fish that get through the net and fishermen to do it to keep others safe (lazy analogy but I'm not changing it). But our ultimate solution must be something other than "build prisons" or "hire more police." Cost-wise, alone, that would be a strain on the tax payers.
How many three year olds are angry little jerks? A few certainly and those are one set of outliers I mentioned in my previous post so prisons are necessary.

The vast majority of people are good and will do good on their own if given the chance. Even in that video, the kid punched the person in the arm (dic* move BUT he didn't take a swing at the face) but a completely lost cause case would have stabbed the person in the throat so I think there's hope maybe for that kid.

What I am saying is, somewhere along the line, we're losing the middle-of-the-road kids. That's what needs to be given serious consideration. Granted, even in a perfect system those middle kids might not be the greatest contributors to society but they also wouldn't be criminals.

Both of our countries are going to have to spend the time, energy and money either way but spending it early would result in fewer prisons and more contributing citizens.

Interestingly, police aren't necessary for an upstanding citizen to live a good life except for protection. This citizen will naturally obey rules because they're beneficial to himself and to his fellow citizens and not because he'll go to jail if he breaks a law.
In any case, I'm not so sure that any amount of policemen deters criminality in an effective ratio. If I had a mind to, I could get away with seriously bad behavior, even if there was a patrol car every fifteen minutes.
Basically, using force isn't the ultimate solution in my opinion but our capacity to use problem solving and reason is.

Off to the Detroit Zoo (which isn't actually in Detroit, by the way). It's been years but should be fun.

I had a similar situation a few years back, not in a store, but a pedestrianised shopping area. Two teenagers on bikes came from behind me and one gave me a painful whack on my elbow with his handlebar. I shouted, but they were gone. Fifteen minutes later I saw them approach me again and clotheslined the one that hit me, pulling him off his bike. Fortunately I was able to get away with just giving him and his mate a 'stern talking to' and they both toddled off pushing their bikes, with tails between legs.

Watching that video, it seemed completely alien to me that, other than one little old lady, shoppers and even staff, just stood back and waved the sc****gs through. And people wonder why people such kids decide it's ok to carry a knife and stick it in anyone they don't like.

This may be just a U.K thing but our police stop and search rules are hopeless police should be allowed to stop and search anyone anytime especially gangs.

I don't know what i would have done had i been there i would probably have done what the rest did and waited for them to go, if you knocked one off his bike you run the risk of him pulling a knife or the gang waiting for you in the car park or being prosecuted for assault, the world has gone mad.

Well, I'm back from the Detroit Zoo (not actually in Detroit). Long and hot but a lot of fun. Was 29.4C. A 1/2 liter of Gatorade was 4 pounds which is fine since the money goes to a worthy cause. Hope you appreciate the converting. I also realize the photo below looks like it could have been taken in anyone's backyard even though it is, in fact, from the butterfly exhibit at the zoo. If further proof is required, I'll get you a shot of a camel off the wife's phone. Yeah, I joke a lot though I am deadly serious about the camel.

In any case, after a short bit on Google, I found this regarding Michigan "stop and search" (which will be very similar to the entire country): "Generally speaking, law enforcement is not legally permitted to enter your home, vehicle, or clothing without having a signed search warrant from a judge or magistrate."
"Reasonable cause" is a big thing here. If it's not met and a search occurs, from what I understand, the person walks. It gets crazier. Anything found is not admissible if the one criteria, "reasonable cause," is absent. Keep in mind, I'm no lawyer.

I think there are times to step in and that was one--I'm talking about short-term/immediate-type handling of a situation here for the benefit of the public at large. If what you did was on camera and someone had the poor judgement to sue you, and if I were a judge, you'd get a thank you from me since you didn't use excessive force, you protected your fellow citizen AND you achieved the highly sought-after goal of getting a child to truly understand the repercussions of what he did wrong. Also I may, in this super-hypothetical situation. award you a couple of season tickets to your favorite football club for being an upstanding citizen.
waved the sc****gs through.
That's a blessing and a curse when it comes to humans. There's an innate decency among most folks in that they don't immediately default to violence which is fantastic. But that curse is sometimes force is needed. Simple training, in the form of PSAs (public service announcements) that provide actions to take would probably be in order to handle these odd occurrences popping up now and then.
Cheers!

Have a good day Dave.
Come to my neck of the woods and they will have no bother searching and believe me they can rhyme an act of law out.
